The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies Review

Vasant Lad's The Complete Book of Ayurvedic Home Remedies is a wonderful opus which provides both easy, straight-forward explanations for remedies while assisting the interested and engaged student to learn the sanskrit of the remedies from an Ayurvedic point of view. Specifically important is our "tridoshas," the three body types that we all have that must be in good balance for essential self-healing. Those who want to learn more about Ayurveda and its connection to astrology, the basis of all spiritual traditions, will connect the fire, earth-water, air-either connection of the four elements of the astrological chart and each person's temperament. Using one's own astrological chart, one can connect the ancient astrological - elemental philosopies to create greater understanding to one's more rapid self healing, not only of body, but of mind and spirit through understanding the greater connection we have to our inner being and others' health challenges. This is an opus for 'WHOLE HEALTH!!!!!!!!!!!!" Great gratitude to Vasant Lad for this greater enlightening work!!!!!!!!!

Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft (Llewellyn's Practical Magick)

Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft (Llewellyn's Practical Magick) Review

I highly recommend this book for a number of reasons:
1. It is an overall good read that covers the basics of the Craft.
2. It is by Buckland and his style of writing is very straight forward (not like trying to decipher a few of the works of Crowley -even though doing that is worth it!) and descript. He doesn't leave you guessing to very much. He presents a simple and direct view at what Wicca is and how to become a solitary witch. This is probably one of his greatest books of all time. Certainly the vast majority of wiccans and pagans in general will agree with me. It has introduced thousands upon thousands to the "craft of the wise".
3. Buckland has been around for years. He is one of the most knowledgable witches you will find and though this book is really an introduction to the craft, it has enough in it to start a person off and also live the wiccan life. It has some fairly advanced material within it also. Also the reviews at the end of each chapter are good to have -they ensure you are actually soaking in what is being taught, rather than simply skimming through it.

There are many more reasons I could list, but I am trumped on time! Blessed be to all and if you choose to buy this book, be prepared for a journey that will introduce you to a new spirituality and religion that is unrestrictive to individual growth and development. Bright blessings!

Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft (Llewellyn's Practical Magick) Overview

Here is the most complete self-study course in modern Wicca available, written by the person who first went public with "The Old Religion" in the United States. For group or solitary use, it includes rituals; exercises for developing psychic talents; information on all major "sects" of the Craft; sections on tools, beliefs, dreams, meditations, divination, herbal lore, healing, ritual clothing; and much, much more.

Even those who have practiced Wicca for years find useful information in Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft, and many covens are using it as their textbook. Profusely illustrated and full of music and chants.

Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft (Llewellyn's Practical Magick) Specifications

This 1986 classic is not only an excellent introduction to the Wiccan religion and earth-based religions in general, it's also a workbook that can take the serious student to the equivalent level of third-degree Gardnerian. Though Raymond Buckland was a student of the late great Gerald Gardner, this manual does not adhere to a specific branch or denomination of witchcraft, but rather seeks to teach the elements and philosophies common to all, whether Celtic, Saxon, Finnish, or what have you. Buckland is credited with bringing the "old religion" to the U.S., and covens and solitary witches practicing the craft in the U.S. today have him to thank for getting it out of the closet. While Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft is a must-have for any serious Wiccan practitioner, it is full of down-to-earth spiritual wisdom, which makes it a wonderful addition to the library of any broadminded seeker on the path toward the One. --P. The Girls' Doodle Book: Amazing Pictures to Complete and Create

The Girls' Doodle Book: Amazing Pictures to Complete and Create Review

Purchased this for my 7 year old daughter and she LOVES it. Also purchased the Beautiful Doodles which she loves as well. I got the Boys Doodle for my 8 year nephew and he is really enjoying that. I think these are an excellent series. I took the books to Staples and had them spiral bound....and idea I got from another reviewer. Adds about -4 to the cost of the book, but these are nice thick books and they really make a nice keepsake. I'd give this a 5 star but the binding makes it a 4. They should sell these already spiral bound. I purchased Beautiful Doodles for another relative, a 5 year old girl and I'm sure she'll love it. I highly recommend this series for any kid that likes to draw even a little bit! I plan on purchasing more as birthday gifts.

The Complete Book of U.S. History

The Complete Book of U.S. History Review

As homeschoolers, we struggled to find a history book that would capture my son's attention. This one focusing more on one person's story and how it fit into a historical event was perfect. Was a little disappointed that there wasn't more "meat" to it, but then again, I think it was good for elementary kids. And apparently the information provided was done in a way that my son could remember, as he pointed out some cool facts to me, while we were at a museum later! Thanks!

The Complete Book of Food Counts, 8th Edition

The Complete Book of Food Counts, 8th Edition Review

My father had congestive heart failure last year and he is a diabetic. Not only does he have to watch his salt intake, water intake and sugar, he is trying to lose weight as well. He is now able to chart his calories, sodium, fat and so much more with this book. There are several fast food restaurants in here if you have to eat on the go. A wonderful book that is easy to use. I used to have the 4th edition and loved it so I upgraded to the most recent edition and I am thrilled. No complaints, I highly recommend this book.

Moomin Book Five: The Complete Tove Jansson Comic Strip

Moomin Book Five: The Complete Tove Jansson Comic Strip Review

Moomin Book Five: The Complete Tove Jansson Comic Strip Overview

The final volume in the series drawn by Tove Jansson

Moomin Book Five: The Complete Tove Jansson Comic Strip
features the final strips drawn by Tove Jansson and written by her brother Lars for the London Evening News, before Lars took over both the art and the writing. The first “Moomin Winter” returns with more unwanted guests than in Book One, especially the curious and secret-spilling Nibling, sending the Moomin household into a tizzy of secrecy and closed doors. In “Moomin Under Sail,” theMoomins find themselves without a new adventure until Too-Ticky’s compass gives them the idea to build a boat and head to sea. Finally, we meet the Fuddler in “Fuddler’s Courtship.”Mymble captures poor Fuddler’s heart, and his bumbling drives her straight into the arms of Dr.Hatter, the local psychiatrist. Delightfully quirky, the Moomin family does not fare well under the gaze of someone trained in correcting odd behavior.

Home Vegetable Gardening: A Complete and Practical Guide to the Planting and Care of All Vegetables, Fruits and Berries Worth Growing for Home Use (Forgotten Books)

Home Vegetable Gardening: A Complete and Practical Guide to the Planting and Care of All Vegetables, Fruits and Berries Worth Growing for Home Use (Forgotten Books) Review

This book can be very useful for the small space gardener as it discusses at length, basics of gardening. Anywhere the book describes use of horses, logic would indicate that a tiller of varying sizes could be substituted. Crop rotation is also discussed, and multiple acres are not needed for this.
I enjoyed the instructions on constructing a manure-driven hotbed. This was the way it was done before electric seedling heat mats were around. Also prepping sods for seed starting. It reminded me of the way things were done years before pellet pots, plastic seed flats and cell packs were common.
The book is old enough to resurrect much of the forgotten techniques used by our grandparents and great-grandparents -of the way things were, the way things could be again for those trying to garden more naturally and self-sufficiently... not buying everything from the garden store. It might also be helpful for the budding survivalist who no longer wants to rely on manufactured products.

I found the list of seed varieties in the book to be fascinating. Recognizing many of the listed varieties to still be available today. It was neat to see some of the Heirloom seed choices i made were also the Author's picks.

The age of the book in most cases matters very little when it comes to gardening basics, things don't change much at all. In fact, this book might be better for beginners since it is a book that encourages a do-it-yourself and a 'from the ground up' tone. It is almost void of any pre-made devices and there are no gimmicky products being hocked.
The old standby tools are recommended, time tested and readily available.

My only real problem with the book at all is that the rewrite of the eBook version omitted a number of images and pictures that would have been helpful. But a quick internet search of the names of the described items in most cases will quickly locate images.
The book itself is full of sound instruction, good logic and the author has a friendly writing style.

The book is about 100 years old and free... just download it already. It is well worth the time spent to read it.

Home Vegetable Gardening: A Complete and Practical Guide to the Planting and Care of All Vegetables, Fruits and Berries Worth Growing for Home Use (Forgotten Books) Overview

A vegetable garden (also known as a vegetable patch or vegetable plot) is a garden that exists to grow vegetables and other plants useful for human consumption, in contrast to a flower garden that exists for aesthetic purposes. It is a small-scale form of vegetable growing. A vegetable garden typically includes a compost heap and several plots or divided areas of land, intended to grow one or two types of plant in each plot. Many families have home kitchen and vegetable gardens that they use to make food. In World War II, people had gardens called a 'victory garden' which provided food to families and thus freed up resources for the war effort.

With the increased interest in organic and sustainable living, many people are turning to vegetable gardening as a supplement to their family's diet. Food grown in your own backyard, uses up little if any fuel for shipping, and the grower can be sure of what exactly was used to grow it. Organic horticulture, or organic gardening, has become increasingly popular for the modern home gardener.

There are many types of vegetable gardens. Potagers, a garden in which vegetables, herbs and flowers are grown together, has become more popular than the more traditional rows or blocks. (Quote from wikipedia.org)

Western Garden Book of Edibles: The Complete A-Z Guide to Growing Your Own Vegetables, Herbs, and Fruits

Western Garden Book of Edibles: The Complete A-Z Guide to Growing Your Own Vegetables, Herbs, and Fruits Review

I love Sunset Magazine and was excited when I found out about this book. I own Sunset's "The Edible Garden" (2005), which is my favorite gardening book. As I suspected, Sunset's "Western Garden Book of Edibles" (2010) is an updated version of the prior book. It has 304 pages, as opposed to the 194 of the earlier book. Recent readers of Sunset Magazine will recognize some of the pictures in the new book.

I think this book is very useful. It is just beautiful to look at as well, which is important to me. I love their comprehensive climate zone information; all 32 zones! The book is also full of inspiration, especially for gardeners with challenges, like apartment dwellers. The majority of the book consists of individual listings of plants in six categories: vegetables, herbs, berries, fruits, nuts, and tropicals. Each individual listing tells you what zone the plant works in, how much sun and water it needs, information about how to eat it, information about different varieties of the plant, and specifics on how to grow it. The specifics on how to grow beets, for example, list sections on the best site, yield, soil, planting, spacing, water, fertilizer, harvest, and challenges (such as bugs).

The section on garden design discusses issues like color, texture, & form, balance & repetition, focal points, relating to architecture, arbors & trellises, paths, raised beds (including building instructions), containers, and space-saving garden plans. The practical guide section is a step-by-step guide to just about everything else a new or moderately experienced gardener would want to know. It is meant to be an overview covering the basics in a few pages for each topic.

Overall, this would be a great book for newbies. This is our family's third season gardening in a community plot and it is the perfect book for us.
