The Real Book: Sixth Edition Review

I bought all three volumes of this series. I like the hefty comb binding that lies flat on the music stand. The printing is large enough and simple enough to be read easily, even in slightly dimmed light. There is plenty of room to add one's own notes. There are some streamlined performance notes. I appreciate the index in the front. It has a variety of songs from the most revered jazz classics to some popular numbers. Still, the series does not have ALL the songs ever written during the jazz and swing era. That doesn't seem humanly possible, so I didn't expect it.

BUT somehow I got it in my head that it had the words. Guess I was wrong. No words. This is not a huge deal because the words are pretty easy to get on the Internet whereas the tunes are not. Still, I wish the words were included. There is enough room on most of the pages, as they stand, that the words could have been included. As I collect the words I will hand print them under the staffs. Lack of words is the only reason I did not give all 5 stars.

The Marine biology Coloring Book is a coloring textbook. It is a complete course on Marine biology that you can color in. Coloring provides a multisensory approach to learning which can enhance memorization. Coloring is fun and allows you to be creative, while helping you learn about a new topic. As a teacher who has used this book in my classroom, I would highly recommend it. Topics include marine ecology, rocky coastlines, coral reefs, biology, coloration, defense mechanisms, reproduction and taxonomy of fish, and various phyla of invertebrates. There are some that believe these books are too hard for young children. This is nonsense. Coloring books provide a pressure free way to learn. Who says a 5 year old cannot learn the names or body parts of a fish. On the other hand, there is a ton of information in here that is appropriate for all ages including college students. One need only use the information that is of interest to them and then enjoy coloring in the pictures! My father had congestive heart failure last year and he is a diabetic. Not only does he have to watch his salt intake, water intake and sugar, he is trying to lose weight as well. He is now able to chart his calories, sodium, fat and so much more with this book. There are several fast food restaurants in here if you have to eat on the go. A wonderful book that is easy to use. I used to have the 4th edition and loved it so I upgraded to the most recent edition and I am thrilled. No complaints, I highly recommend this book.

The Little SAS Book has received a small number of very negative reviews, and, as one of the authors, I just want to say to those people that I'm very sorry they were so disappointed. Let me be the first to admit that no book--including The Little SAS Book--can meet the needs of every reader.

As for the accusation that the book is informal in tone, I can only say, "Guilty!" The title of this book makes it clear that it is intended to be informal, friendly, and accessible.

Another reviewer states, "If you have experience in either programming or SAS you will outgrow this book in a couple days." I'm sorry you feel that way, but I can attest that not everyone shares your view. SAS programmers with decades of experience have told me that they used this book to review before taking the SAS certification base exam. One of the greatest compliments I have ever received was from a developer at SAS Institute who told me that he uses our book when he writes SAS programs! Heck, I use it too. SAS is such a big language that nobody can remember the exact syntax of every option. Lora Delwiche and I designed this book to be the kind of reference that we would like to use. This book is so well respected that for many years a copy of the book was shipped with every copy of SAS software. That stopped only because SAS software is now delivered via the Internet.

If you are the kind of person who prefers a more formal style, then please don't buy this book. There are many other sources of information about SAS software. These include the SAS Help and Documentation provided with the software, extensive help on SAS Institute's customer support web site, and many wonderful conference papers. The best source for conference papers is a site owned by Lex Jansen. I am not allowed to include links in this review, but you shouldn't have any trouble finding these web sites.

The title of this book is spot on, and I am glad to have picked it up as it has been really useful to me in my work and studies. I needed a simple book for quick reference and this fits the bill precisely. Each two page spread has the diagram/drawing of the muscle on the left, and the basic information on the right. Having it all there without having to turn pages makes it very easy to use. If you are studying anatomy or medicine, then you will need a more detailed text, but for everything else I cannot recommend this enough.

Okay, I looked at a lot of books for this topic before deciding on this one. I have to say, personally - I would not have read it in the order it's presented. I wish I had taken more time when it came to look through the book before starting it with my daughter. My daughter is 10 and I would have started with the breast development, puberty growth spurt, and a few others - not here are all your parts, the boy parts, and this is sex! However, if you're getting this for an older girl that's already gone through the puberty phase and is wondering about sex that might be what you're looking for (and then I imagine she may not be as interested in the other chapters I mentioned). All in all, this gives a lot of very good information, explained well, and has simple diagrams. So far, my daughter loves it when we read it. It's something I keep in my room and when it's time I read it with her (to be able to talk or answer questions more). I don't recommend reading this in the order it's presented, but I think I already said that. : )
