Disaster Status (Mercy Hospital, Book 2) Review
Candace Calvert has gone and done it to me again ... she has written a novel, a Christian romance, no less, that I enjoyed. A lot. Disaster Status, The second of her Mercy Hospital series, is a medical drama, set in a hospital in California. Her characters struggle with their lives and choices as they struggle to save others, as physicians, nurses, and in this book, a firefighter/paramedic. She focuses on story, and keeps the story both interesting and realistic. What she writes about is played over again and again in emergency services throughout the country. She writes with a deft touch, approaching subjects that are usually quite difficult to express well.
Once again, Ms. Calvert touches on an aspect of my own experience, that of working with persons with severe mental illness ... personalizing that particular character, giving us internal dialog and leading the reader through his psychosis, helping to understand in ways most people don't get to see how what seems bizarre and strange to people on the outside, seems a sane and reasonable response to the patient's interpretation of the world. She doesn't fall into the trap many dramatizations of mental illness do, that is that mentally ill people, particularly schizophrenics, are automatically violent, but rather shows that when a very small percentage of mentally ill people do act out in a dangerous way, it's not the random actions often portrayed in the news and most popular fiction.
The relationships among her characters are anything but simple and straightforward. There's a very real-life feel to the complexities of their interactions. I look forward to the next installment, Code Triage, due in October 2010.
