Forest Animals Coloring Book (Dover Coloring Books)

Forest Animals Coloring Book (Dover Coloring Books) Review

My little girls (8, 5, and 3) love to color when I read, and I like the coloring page to be related to topic. The coloring pages help keep them interested in the topic, and stop fights from starting. Dover coloring books really made school easier and more fun for all of us.

Katy's New World (The Katy Lambright Series, Book 1)

Katy's New World (The Katy Lambright Series, Book 1) Review

This book is not only well written, but is totally engaging. I didn't want to put the book down after I started reading it. I give this book "a two-thumbs up" and recommend it highly. In Katy's New World Katy struggles to keep her roots as a Mennonite and yet fit in with her new friends at school. Life is full of ups in downs as Katy learns about the "outside" world and struggles to keep old and new friendships alike. After the deacons of her Old Order Mennonite church approve her request to extend her education past her community's ninth grade norm, Katy Lambright starts her sophomore year in public high school. Unsure of what to expect and mindful of the deacons' warning of becoming too worldly, Katy begins her journey into higher education. Katy is assigned Shelby Nuss, her escort for the first week to help her settle in. But when Katy invites her lifelong best friend, Annika, over to her home with her new friend, it ends in disaster. She starts to realize that her two worlds are planets apart. On top of all of this, some of her extended family is against the idea of her extending her education, especially in the outside world. After all, she'd heard the whispers of her fellowship, "Would she be her mother's daughter through and through?" Katy learns that Jewel, a not-so-nice girl, is coming to live with Shelby and her family as a foster child. Jewel seems resentful and bitter. Can Katy reach out to her or will her effort to reach out end in disaster also? Throughout the book, Katy struggles and tries to overcome the obstacles that land in her path at nearly every turn. To make matters worse, she makes a huge mistake that could cost her the dreams she's had for so long. Can Katy balance both worlds, or must she pick one? Will she lose all that is dear to her? Can she decide where she belongs? Review by Emily, 14 years old

Pat the Bunny (Touch and Feel Book)

Pat the Bunny (Touch and Feel Book) Review

This is THE touch and feel book, and has been a classic for decades, and there is a reason for that. My daughter, now 14 months, has loved touching and feeling every page since she was about 6 months old. She always pats the bunny, plays peek a boo with Paul, and puts her finger in Mummy's ring. She never gets bored or restless like she does with other books that are unsuccessfully geared toward the toddler set. It is a simple, soothing little read, with the perfect amount of stimulation, and the perfect length. It took my daughter a while to understand how to "smell the flowers," but now she loves to do that, too. It is a joy to read for both parent and child.

For those who call this book "flimsy," the pages and comb binding have been the format forever. That IS the Pat the Bunny format, and it is perfectly sturdy. Just because it is not big and heavy does not mean it is not sturdy. In fact, many board books are so heavy for my daughter to pick up and hard for little tiny hands to manipulate-- and their pages sometimes stick together. This little lightweight treasure with easy-to-turn pages on a spiral bound make this book sooo easy for little ones hold and turn the pages. My daughter has played with it many, many times, and I do not treat it any differently from her other board books, and it is in perfect condition, just like the rest. I think a toddler would have to go pretty crazy on it to rip it or anything.

Pat the Bunny (Touch and Feel Book) Overview

For over 50 years, Pat the Bunny has held a special place as Baby's First Book...and as a perennial bestseller. Since its first publication in 1940, Pat the Bunny has sold over 6 million copies, making it the number 6 all- time bestselling children's hardcover book*. Play along with Paul and Judy as they smell the flowers, look in the mirror, play peek-a-boo, and, of course, pat the bunny.

*Publisher's Weekly, 2/5/96

Pat the Bunny (Touch and Feel Book) Specifications

"Judy can pat the bunny. Now YOU pat the bunny." Sound familiar? Pat the Bunny is a part of childhood, as soothing as cocoa and animal crackers. Dorothy Kunhardt's interactive book for babies and toddlers was one of the first of its kind when it was published in 1940, and it has since sold over six million copies. We pat the soft fur of the bunny, play peek-a-boo, look in the mirror, and then do it all over again. (And again and again and again.) After you Pat the Bunny with your baby, why not Pat the Cat and Pat the Dog? These two sequels were written by Edith Kunhardt, the daughter of the author of the original book. Both use the same tried-and-true Pat the Bunny format: sturdy cardboard pages with eight activities that wee ones can explore, from sniffing some brownies, to squeaking a teddy bear, to unfastening Grandma's tennis shoe. The simple line drawings and pastel colors don't do much for adults, but somehow they are just right for babies. This boxed set is a fine choice for a baby gift or first birthday present, and a lifesaver on a long car trip. (Baby to preschool) --Marcie Bovetz

Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb (Bright & Early Books)

Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb (Bright & Early Books) Review

This is a must have for the little boy in your life. Sure my daughter likes it too, but it's hard to find good boy books. This is a GREAT boy book. My nephew is almost two and can't be without his. While reading the pages, we drum the words out on the pages or stomp our feet to the rhythm. My 6 month old son will sit through 4 or 5 readings before he's not interested. The board book version is very durable. It stands up against my son who likes to suck on the binding. (I try and stop him, but it's futile.)

The Complete Book of Food Counts, 8th Edition

The Complete Book of Food Counts, 8th Edition Review

My father had congestive heart failure last year and he is a diabetic. Not only does he have to watch his salt intake, water intake and sugar, he is trying to lose weight as well. He is now able to chart his calories, sodium, fat and so much more with this book. There are several fast food restaurants in here if you have to eat on the go. A wonderful book that is easy to use. I used to have the 4th edition and loved it so I upgraded to the most recent edition and I am thrilled. No complaints, I highly recommend this book.
