The Potty Book - For Girls

The Potty Book - For Girls Review

I love this book! The rhymes are great and they keep the whole topic light and upbeat. The illustrations also make the child look very excited, like it's a very positive thing to learn to use the potty. You couldn't ask for a better book for potty training! I used the boy version of the book with my son and he was potty trained very easily. I started without this book with my daughter and it's been really hard. I remembered this book yesterday and bought the girl version for her. She loves it and since yesterday has spent hours looking at the pictures. I have a feeling potty training is going to be easier now.

The Potty Book - For Girls Feature

The Potty Book - For Girls Overview

A toddler's graduation from diapers to the potty is always a very important moment--and one to make parents and toddlers proud! In this book, Hannah needs to have her diaper changed so she can go out and play. Then Mom and Dad bring a big box home, and Hannah is anxious to open it up and see what's inside. Is it a rocking chair? A bed for Teddy? No, it's a potty--which means it's time for Hannah to graduate from diapers. This gentle and humorous little story is charmingly illustrated and told in verse. Little girls will enjoy looking at the pictures and having the story read to them. Meanwhile, they'll start getting the idea that it's time for them to grow up, exactly like Hannah. So that at last, they'll be able to say: "I'm off to the potty, No more diapers for me! And I feel great, I am proud of ... ME! Here's a pleasant and effective new way to begin a child's toilet training. Barron's also publishes a potty book for a little boy, starring Henry. (Ages 1-4)

Proven Guilty (The Dresden Files, Book 8)

Proven Guilty (The Dresden Files, Book 8) Review

Aside from being a devastatingly good read, Dead Beat introduced four very important elements into the Dresdenverse: the revelation that there is a traitor in the White Council of Wizards, a real hint (in the form of Cowl) of the larger Game, the introduction of Lasciel as a character and Harry being made a Warden. While those were introduced in Dead Beat, aside from Lasciel, none of those elements are really addressed until Proven Guilty.

It is, therefore, little surprise when the eighth book in the Dresden Files opens with Harry witnessing his fellow Wardens in action. Unfortunately, not in the battlefield, but in the courtroom. Now that he is a Warden, Harry is more privy to the nastier side of the job: executing rogue practitioners of the Art. Not killing in self-defense, or in the heat of the moment, but summary execution Guillotine style. Obviously this kind of thing does not sit well with our Hero, but you know it will inform the action to come. Oh yeah, Harry also gets a little "heads-up" from the Gatekeeper that there is Black Magic afoot in the old town.

While the other elements I mentioned earlier develop and unfold over the course of the book and mentioning them would be too spoilery, I will say that they are explored in much more depth in this book. Lasciel continues to have a key role in Harry's adventures, though not as prominent as in Dead Beat, and she and Harry's interaction continues to be one of the more intriguing aspects in the series. Dead Beat sent Murphy off in the opening pages, so that book needed Lasciel to fill a role for Harry, and she did it admirably (if deceitfully), but now that Murphy is back, it was only natural for Lasciel's role to be less prominent (though still important).

I am talking about Lasciel so much because the last time we saw the Carpenter family was the celebration at the end of Death Masks where Harry first acquired Lasciel's Coin trying to save Michael's infant son. We readers are not the only ones who have not seen Michael since then, neither has Harry. Worried what his friend will think, worried that he will sense the Denarian taint, Dresden has avoided Michael for nearly three years. Of course Fate intervenes and sends Michael's oldest daughter Harry's way seeking his help for some trouble of the weird kind. While Proven Guilty brings Michael back into the fold, it is actually more about his wife, Charity and daughter, Molly.

Proven Guilty is a book very much about reconciliations. While the newest book set to come out, Changes, indicates in its title a change in direction, Proven Guilty is a transitional novel in its own right. It was not as evident before, but in re-reading the books, Proven Guilty really feels like the beginning of a departure from the more singular story-telling that dominates the first seven books, and a subtle transition into the more Lore heavy later books. I would point to Dead Beat as the last Dresden Files book you can read out of order without it affecting your enjoyment. But the plot, characters and actions in Proven Guilty are SO driven by events in earlier books, the story's depth is largely dependent on already knowing what has gone before (one of the primary plot points, Horror movie monsters coming alive, was actually a throw away line in Dead Beat, or so we thought!). While it draws them into its loop, and makes them feel as if all the books were connected all the while, it is the first book that FEELS that way while you are reading. I actually read Proven Guilty before Dead Beat the first time I went through Dresden, and for the first time since I had been reading the series, felt as if I was really missing out on something by not reading the previous book. I guess by eight books in, it is hard to summarize so much action and plot development efficiently.

The book itself is quality, however, for whatever reason, it is just not one of my favorite books in the series. I will admit that I just LOVE both Dead Beat and White Night though, so part of it may be the "sandwich syndrome" that I mentioned with Blood Rites, where it is just between two better Files books to me. However, even in that comparison, I would say it falls short of Blood Rites as well, and I would rank it in the lower half of Dresden on the whole. I think part of the problem was the first half of the book just did not flow as well for me as other Dresden books. Setting the book largely around a Horror Convention for the first half might be part of that, as I have read other Urban Fantasy books set around conventions that did not draw me in as well as other books in their series (the Repairman Jack book Conspiracies comes to mind). Another thing I was not as enthusiastic about was the focus on Charity, as even after this book I just am very "eh" on her as a character. However, once Harry starts putting things together, the second half opens up and is a lot more entertaining. In fact the last 150 pages or so is comparable to any 150 pages to be found in the Dresdenverse. I just feel like other books in the series have that kind of stretch in them without taking so much time to get going.

As a transitional book Proven Guilty is excellent, as it reconciles many relationships that will be important later, as well as interweaving disparate allies (such as Thomas and Charity) and forcing them to work in concert out of a mutual respect for Harry. This is something that Harry very much shares with his Butcherian counterpart Gaius Octavian. It is one of Tavi's greatest skills to bring former enemies together and get them to work towards a common goal. It is something that Harry has in him as well, and it definitely will become more of an issue going forward, as Harry continues to accrue both allies and enemies, and it will not always be easy to tell them apart.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book 5)

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book 5) Review

J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
(Bloomsbury, 2003)

Reviewed by Darren Cronshaw

It was an out of the way store and so we didn't have to wait as long as some customers did in more popular bookshops, but I lined up after 9am Saturday June 21 with other eager J.K. Rowling readers and purchased my copy of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I even got one of the specially-marked `DO NOT OPEN BEFORE 21st JUNE 2003' book boxes as a collector's item. Before last Saturday 195 million copies of Rowling's Books I-IV had been sold in 55 languages across more than 200 countries. With Book V there is more Harry Potter around - much more with its 766 pages and some 13 million books already printed - one million of them in Australia.

In this latest volume of Rowling's planned 7 book saga, Harry Potter and his friends do yet another year at Hogwarts School. There is a new teacher to hate, new tricks and antics to get up to, and new spells, games and fun that will keep readers intrigued for hours. The book has the most involved battle scene in all of the five books (involving about twenty witches and wizards attacking backwards and forwards). What most captures the imagination, though, is the challenges of growing up. Harry and his classmates are up to their 5th year 'OWLs' (Ordinary Wizarding Level exams), and Harry struggles with adolescence, self-esteem, teasing, longing for affirmation from a mentor, trying to figure girls out, cramming for exams, and losing someone close to him. At one point Harry thought he should have been chosen for a special responsibility (rather than a friend) and he worried anxiously, `Did this make him as arrogant as Draco Malfoy? Did he think himself superior to everyone else? Did he really believe he was better than Ron?' (p.151) Some Christians criticise Harry's situational ethics, but his struggles over decision-making are those that young (and old) can readily identify with.

Apart from adolescent struggles, there was concern after Book IV that the books were getting more graphically evil. Rowling admits her portrayal of evil is getting darker, and that this is necessary to show the true nature of evil (as bad and to be fought against). However, I found Book V to be not as dark as Book IV, but it did deal in more depth with dying and grief. These themes of death, grief, emotional struggle and appropriate use of power are not always neatly resolved but are definitely worth exploring in conversation with our children and with young people around us.

A key lesson that came through is the importance of pulling together. Whether on the Quidditch sport field or in the battle against 'He who can't be named', unity is important. When Harry accepted his destiny, he went to Hogwarts to learn and equip himself for the tasks ahead. This year Hogwart's Sorting Hat adds to its usual start-of-term song this warning to stand together:

Though condemned I am to split you
Still I worry that it's wrong ...
For our Hogwarts is in danger
From external, deadly foes
And we must unite inside her
Or we'll crumble from within (pp. 186-187).

Professor Dumbledore and others who are pledged to fight evil band together and commit to one another in the Order of the Phoenix. The Phoenix is a mythological creature that rises to life from its own ashes, and is known as the `resurrection bird.' The phoenix in the Harry Potter series has saved the life of both Harry and Dumbledore. The bird and its potential for new life is an appropriate symbol of their common struggle for a better world.

As Christians, we gather in resurrection communities that could be called a kind of `Order of the Phoenix' but are more commonly known as churches. I'll be exploring the themes from this latest book with young people in our church, and lining up again next year for Book VI.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book 5) Feature

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book 5) Overview

I say to you all, once again--in the light of
Lord Voldemort’s return, we are only as strong
as we are united, as weak as we are divided.
Lord Voldemort’s gift for spreading discord and
enmity is very great. We can fight it only by showing
an equally strong bond of friendship and trust.

So spoke Albus Dumbledore at the end of Harry Potter’s fourth year at Hogwarts. But as Harry enters his fifth year at wizard school, it seems those bonds have never been more sorely tested. Lord Voldemort’s rise has opened a rift in the wizarding world between those who believe the truth about his return, and those who prefer to believe it’s all madness and lies--just more trouble from Harry Potter.

Add to this a host of other worries for Harry…
• A Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher with a personality like poisoned honey
• A venomous, disgruntled house-elf
• Ron as keeper of the Gryffindor Quidditch team
• And of course, what every student dreads: end-of-term Ordinary Wizarding Level exams

…and you’d know what Harry faces during the day. But at night it’s even worse, because then he dreams of a single door in a silent corridor. And this door is somehow more terrifying than every other nightmare combined.

In the richest installment yet of J. K. Rowling’s seven-part story, Harry Potter confronts the unreliability of the very government of the magical world, and the impotence of the authorities at Hogwarts.

Despite this (or perhaps because of it) Harry finds depth and strength in his friends, beyond what even he knew; boundless loyalty and unbearable sacrifice.

Though thick runs the plot (as well as the spine), readers will race through these pages, and leave Hogwarts, like Harry, wishing only for the next train back.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Book 5) Specifications

As his fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry approaches, 15-year-old Harry Potter is in full-blown adolescence, complete with regular outbursts of rage, a nearly debilitating crush, and the blooming of a powerful sense of rebellion. It's been yet another infuriating and boring summer with the despicable Dursleys, this time with minimal contact from our hero's non-Muggle friends from school. Harry is feeling especially edgy at the lack of news from the magic world, wondering when the freshly revived evil Lord Voldemort will strike. Returning to Hogwarts will be a relief... or will it?

The fifth book in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series follows the darkest year yet for our young wizard, who finds himself knocked down a peg or three after the events of last year. Somehow, over the summer, gossip (usually traced back to the magic world's newspaper, the Daily Prophet) has turned Harry's tragic and heroic encounter with Voldemort at the Triwizard Tournament into an excuse to ridicule and discount the teen. Even Professor Dumbledore, headmaster of the school, has come under scrutiny by the Ministry of Magic, which refuses to officially acknowledge the terrifying truth that Voldemort is back. Enter a particularly loathsome new character: the toadlike and simpering ("hem, hem") Dolores Umbridge, senior undersecretary to the Minister of Magic, who takes over the vacant position of Defense Against Dark Arts teacher--and in no time manages to become the High Inquisitor of Hogwarts, as well. Life isn't getting any easier for Harry Potter. With an overwhelming course load as the fifth years prepare for their Ordinary Wizarding Levels examinations (O.W.Ls), devastating changes in the Gryffindor Quidditch team lineup, vivid dreams about long hallways and closed doors, and increasing pain in his lightning-shaped scar, Harry's resilience is sorely tested.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, more than any of the four previous novels in the series, is a coming-of-age story. Harry faces the thorny transition into adulthood, when adult heroes are revealed to be fallible, and matters that seemed black-and-white suddenly come out in shades of gray. Gone is the wide-eyed innocent, the whiz kid of Sorcerer's Stone. Here we have an adolescent who's sometimes sullen, often confused (especially about girls), and always self-questioning. Confronting death again, as well as a startling prophecy, Harry ends his year at Hogwarts exhausted and pensive. Readers, on the other hand, will be energized as they enter yet again the long waiting period for the next title in the marvelous, magical series. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter

The Voice Book: Caring For, Protecting, and Improving Your Voice

The Voice Book: Caring For, Protecting, and Improving Your Voice Review

For a long time, I have been attracted to a strong, low and clear voice. I like especially the feelings of energy and confidence coming from the person with that voice. The Voice Book by Kate DeVore and Starr Cookman is a well-written book that helped me understand how to get the voice. There are a good amount of easy and simple exercises in the book that make you feel a quality change in your voice. The book mainly educates us about details such as body alignment, low breathing, opening up a vocal tract and forward resonance (vibration ). A few chapters are also spent on methods and tips on how to protect and maintain voice. In addition, I particularly like that fact that the authors do not forget to mention psychological factors such as confidence and approachability. These factors could influence your relaxation of your body, which in turn facilitates the physical quality.

While I was reading this book, I came to understand that a great quality of voice should be produced in a healthy and relaxed way. Some of us mistakenly try to take on a low tone by forcefully lowering your voice. This is a mistake. It could make your voice sound fake or, in a worse case, injure your throat. A great voice, on contrary, can be achieved by "freeing your natural voice" with a little effort. This book shows how to do just that.

I picked up this book to learn to become better in communication. Having a greater sense of control over my voice allows me to communicate more delicately nuanced subtleties in social and business situations. "The Voice Book" was of great help for my specific purpose. But it will be as helpful for any other purpose since the book is written for anyone who cares about voice.

Finally, the book is accompanied by a CD. Just listening to the authors' voices, I was amazed by their powerful, beautiful and very clear voices. It just sounds as if there were a high quality stereo inside of their bodies. The moment I heard the voices, I just simply felt I got right people to rely on.

Sara, Book 1: Sara Learns the Secret about the Law of Attraction

Sara, Book 1: Sara Learns the Secret about the Law of Attraction Review

"An inspired narrative of a child's experiential journey into the knowingness that all is well. (it really is.)"

Sara is written as a children's book, but I would highly recommend that all adults read this book, and if you have a child, do read it with them as well. There is something very liberating about suspending the adult mind and dropping into a child's tale of searching for answers about "life, death, and the desires of the heart." Our imagination opens up and ideas that we might ordinarily treat dismissively are given free license to romp in the playground of our mind. Simply-written without being simplistic, Sara takes us on an uplifting journey that is heralded with direct explanations and instructions (received from a large, wise owl named Solomon) toward making dreams come true, and based on the law of attraction.

This new consciousness children's tale is an inspiring indicator of things to come; actually, of an evolutionary development that is already here. Our children are our future. Adults on a spiritual path have habits of a lifetime--experience, conditioning, and patterns of thought and behavior--to let go, update, or reframe in order to find their way to their higher or true self. Children are by nature more open and still exploring the world, through a phase of accelerated growth and change. Introducing them to spiritual precepts, such as Sara does, is to offer them choices for creating for a life and reality that generates appreciation, joy, and good feelings--without all the struggle or backsliding that seems inevitable to we older generations. And "good feelings" is exactly what Sara, Book 1 delivers. So, let the child in you emerge and indulge in a little escape time enjoying this thoughtful and inspired book--and be sure to pass it on, especially to our future stewards.

The Egyptian Book of the Dead (Penguin Classics)

The Egyptian Book of the Dead (Penguin Classics) Review

This edition of Budge's book of the Dead is not the same as the Dover edition (the Papyrus of Ani). It's in fact an edition Budge published a few years later (The Chapters of Coming Forth by Day), and it's a compilation of all the papyri available at the time, making this the most complete edition of the Book of the Dead available today. The translation itself has over 3 times the material in the earlier edition, and the translation is more polished than Budge's earlier work. If you have the Papyrus of Ani, I recommend you get this as well, as you're missing out on a ton of material. While the binding and presentation is not as good as the Dover, in terms of contents it is unbeatable.

The most famous of all ancient Egyptian texts—with an introduction by one of the most celebrated Egyptologists of our time

AMONG THE MOST WIDELY read and studied of all ancient writings, The Egyptian Book of the Dead consists of funerary texts that ancient Egyptian scribes composed for the benefit of the dead. This astonishing array of spells, hymns and litanies, magical formulae and names, and words of power and prayers were all found cut or painted on walls of pyramids and tombs, and painted on coffins, sarcophagi, and rolls of papyri.

This book is fabulous for non teachers as well due to the wide variety of material in the book.

Responsibility. Courage. Compassion. Honesty. Friendship. Persistence. Faith. Everyone recognizes these traits as essentials of good character. In order for our children to develop such traits, we have to offer them examples of good and bad, right and wrong. And the best places to find them are in great works of literature and exemplary stories from history.

William J. Bennett has collected hundreds of stories in The Book of Virtues, an instructive and inspiring anthology that will help children understand and develop character -- and help adults teach them. From the Bible to American history, from Greek mythology to English poetry, from fairy tales to modern fiction, these stories are a rich mine of moral literacy, a reliable moral reference point that will help anchor our children and ourselves in our culture, our history, and our traditions -- the sources of the ideals by which we wish to live our lives. How to Play from a Fake Book (Keyboard Edition)

How to Play from a Fake Book (Keyboard Edition) Review

Let's start off with some assumptions:
You have bothered to spend the few weeks it takes to learn how to read music, even if only slowly.
You are mainly interested in playing pop music (rock, country, soul, r&b etc.) as opposed to jazz or classical (not that this book can't help you with the latter as well).
You have noticed that most song books have what are called lead sheets that only have a treble clef melody line with chord letters over the bars of music, and lyrics.
You have gotten far enough with your keyboard playing that you can play some basic chords with your left hand and a melody with your right hand. Which is all that most songbooks show you how to do.

You have realized that on the recordings you listen to professional musicians seldom play a straight out melody with their right hands, and almost never while the vocalist is singing. Any more than guitar players play a melody, but instead play more interesting chord patterns for accompaniment.
This is the book that teaches you to play the way professionals do. In 88 pages no less. To put it as simply as possible, learn how to read music then get this book as the only book you need to learn how to play keyboards. Just as snowplowing is a useless skiing technique once you learn how to turn stop on skis, simply learning to play left hand chords and a right hand melody is nearly as useless a technique for actually accompanying a singer.
I say 'nearly' because there are in fact times when playing the melody line is fitting, but as your only right hand technique is frustrating and being stuck in a rut. This book gets you out of that rut and gives you the tools to strike off on your own with no musical limitations to hold you back. Man am I happy I found it. In retrospect I would gladly have paid 0 or more for this book when I first started.

Western Garden Book of Edibles: The Complete A-Z Guide to Growing Your Own Vegetables, Herbs, and Fruits

Western Garden Book of Edibles: The Complete A-Z Guide to Growing Your Own Vegetables, Herbs, and Fruits Review

I love Sunset Magazine and was excited when I found out about this book. I own Sunset's "The Edible Garden" (2005), which is my favorite gardening book. As I suspected, Sunset's "Western Garden Book of Edibles" (2010) is an updated version of the prior book. It has 304 pages, as opposed to the 194 of the earlier book. Recent readers of Sunset Magazine will recognize some of the pictures in the new book.

I think this book is very useful. It is just beautiful to look at as well, which is important to me. I love their comprehensive climate zone information; all 32 zones! The book is also full of inspiration, especially for gardeners with challenges, like apartment dwellers. The majority of the book consists of individual listings of plants in six categories: vegetables, herbs, berries, fruits, nuts, and tropicals. Each individual listing tells you what zone the plant works in, how much sun and water it needs, information about how to eat it, information about different varieties of the plant, and specifics on how to grow it. The specifics on how to grow beets, for example, list sections on the best site, yield, soil, planting, spacing, water, fertilizer, harvest, and challenges (such as bugs).

The section on garden design discusses issues like color, texture, & form, balance & repetition, focal points, relating to architecture, arbors & trellises, paths, raised beds (including building instructions), containers, and space-saving garden plans. The practical guide section is a step-by-step guide to just about everything else a new or moderately experienced gardener would want to know. It is meant to be an overview covering the basics in a few pages for each topic.

Overall, this would be a great book for newbies. This is our family's third season gardening in a community plot and it is the perfect book for us.

The Runner's Rule Book: Everything a Runner Needs to Know--And Then Some

The Runner's Rule Book: Everything a Runner Needs to Know--And Then Some Review

I gave this book to my Aunt for Christmas, and she absolutely loved it. I saw her a week after I had given it to her and she had not only read the whole thing but sticky noted pages that she had to read to me because they were so funny, true, and just good. Earlier in the year my aunt and I had run a Half Marathon together (my first, her 3rd) so I thought this book would be a great way to remember our race together, and turns out it was the perfect gift. I recommend this book to every running enthusiast, it highlights the truths and greatnesses of all running experiences!

a Stepping Stone Book™

Haunted Castle on Hallow's Eve (Magic Tree House, 30) Specifications

In the second of the "Merlin Missions"--hardback additions to Mary Pope Osborne's Magic Tree House series--plucky heroes Jack and Annie must once again must travel back in time to rescue Camelot from looming danger.

One wonders why Merlin can't handle this sort of thing himself, but then of course we wouldn't get a chance to see Jack and Annie have another seat-of-the-pants adventure, getting mixed up with shape-shifting magic, armies of birds, a puzzling gem of power, and all sorts of other trouble. With the help of their old pal Teddy (Morgan le Fay's apprentice, last seen in dog form in four earlier Tree House stories), the two "Master Librarians and Magicians of Everyday Magic" must solve the mystery behind a castle full of ghosts and a menacing army of ravens. Not surprisingly, half the trouble comes in unraveling Merlin's riddles and helping Teddy use his rhyming magic correctly.

Osborne doesn't challenge readers overmuch (including the constant restatement of plot elements, perhaps worried that kids might otherwise forget or lose interest) and many parts of the story barely convince (like Teddy's "period" dialogue, e.g., "'Tis cool indeed"), but fans of the Magic Tree House will no doubt love another installment. (Ages 6 to 9) --Paul Hughes

If Your Kid Eats This Book, Everything Will Still Be Okay: How to Know if Your Child's Injury or Illness Is Really an Emergency

If Your Kid Eats This Book, Everything Will Still Be Okay: How to Know if Your Child's Injury or Illness Is Really an Emergency Review

If ever there was a super humorous take on dealing with us sometimese frantic over sensitive parents, this is it! I read this book from cover to cover and was cracking up all the way through. It is choc full of helpful descriptions and lay person explanations of common ailments and how we should deal with them, in a manner that does NOT require a trip to the ER.

I do wish I had this book as a resource to read BEFORE I had my first child. I vividly recall a moment when we had just come home with our first kid and out of the blue, he started to cry uncontrollably, turning red. I hopped all over the place, yelling at the hubby to warm up the car, unwrapped my head scarf off my locks and was heading to the ER for sure. All the fuss and ruckus to get the kid help induced the baby to burp. *Belch* ...And then he was fine again. Womp Womp Wooomp! It was only gas!

So what Dr. Zibners does in this book is break down the anatomy of the infant, toddler and child. She explains, yes "his little piggy" will disappear into rolls of fat. That is okay. And, before you come in for a diagnosis of a blue mark, try a washcloth and soap. Yup. Funny, but true. It is a great book for a first time mom, dad or grandparents.

Dr. Zibners even offers natural remedies for common ailments that wouldn't require a medical prescription, for example, like for constipation, treat the child with the "P"s = peas, plums, prunes, peaches. Aaaah! Yes. Put the infant Pepto away, you say?

She goes down the list of common products a child can safely get away with eating and not croaking: a bit of lipstick. No problem. A scoopfull of Vaseline. It will pass (literally and figuratively)...and of course there are mentions of the ones that should be treated with emergency care.

This book is very fun and Dr. Zibners matter of fact writing style gives the reader comfort in knowing, "no, you're not an idiot, just a hypersensitive and worrywart mom/dad"

The best part for me are the sidebars dispersed throughout the book called "911" and "Emergency" which details scenarios when you ARE to call for help or take your child in and I made it a point to read every one of those tabs.

All in all, you can't go wrong in reading this book or giving it as a gift to the new grandparents, babysitter, new moms. It is a quick and easy read and worth being on every shelf!

If Your Kid Eats This Book, Everything Will Still Be Okay: How to Know if Your Child's Injury or Illness Is Really an Emergency Overview

As an Emergency Room pediatrician, Dr. Lara Zibners has seen it all. She's cared for a portion of the 25 million children in the U.S. who are taken to the ER each year-and she knows that more than 50% of these visits may be unnecessary. IF YOUR KID EATS THIS BOOK, EVERYTHING WILL STILL BE OKAY shows parents when they may need to take action, and when they might be able to just go back to bed and call their doctor in the morning. With sections such as "In the Diaper" and "His Noggin and the Nervous System," Dr. Zibners covers every part of the body and offers sound advice (for example, did you know that oil is the best remedy for dissolving superglue between body parts?), all while maintaining a lively and often hilarious tone. To the question, "What if she chokes on her vomit?" Zibners answers, "A healthy child will not choke on her own vomit, unless she is drunk or high on Grandma's sleeping pills."

Finally, no more frantic late-night searches through the "why to buy,""how to diaper," or "what to feed him" sections found in other childcare books to find out if little Franny needs to go to the ER. This book focuses on the truly important questions, like how to keep her from electrocuting herself in the first place. Not every child has a pediatrician with specialized emergency room experience living in her home. But this book just might be the next best thing.

Lara Zibners, MD, is a former Assistant Professor of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Mount SinaiHospital in New York City. Currently, she divides her professional time between New York and London.

Phineas and Ferb Laughapalooza Joke Book Review

My 7 year old bought this at the book fair and liked it. She gave it to her little brother, 5, who has read it cover to cover 10 or more times. I only gave it 4 stars because I felt it was too short, my five year old could read the whole thing in one sitting.

Shakespeare's Landlord (Lily Bard Mysteries, Book 1)

Shakespeare's Landlord (Lily Bard Mysteries, Book 1) Review

As a relatively new fan of Charlaine Harris, I live in fear that the day will come that there won't be any more books from this incredible author. I've gone through the Sookie Stackhouse books like they were a bag of M&M's. This being my first Lily Bard mystery, I was quite impressed though this is certainly darker than the Stackhouse series.

The book opens when Lily, a cleaning lady discovers the dead body of the landlord of an apartment building where she has several clients. The mysterious Lily has a past that she doesn't want discovered and finds herself entwined having to find the killer for her own protection. As usual, Charlaine creates such interesting characters that you literally suspect every one of them.

My only mild criticism of Charlaine's books is that she doesn't always give enough detail to her big reveal which sometimes feels a bit empty. All in all this was a winner. It didn't disappoint.

Ecstasy Unveiled (Demonica, Book 4)

Ecstasy Unveiled (Demonica, Book 4) Review

Okay I gave this book 4**** because so far of course, Wraith is my Fave Man and story for so many reasons. But Lore has certainly earned him a Big place in my heart. I love that he is actually apart of the family he's always truly longed for but never knew existed. Idess is my girl! I love her. She and Lore are certainly a great match. This story in my opinion was great non-stop action. I saw most of the book being played out as a movie. I got a great visual of the characters, their surroundings, and deep, profound emotion. It's another great chapter in this series about the brothers, their mates, struggles overall, but mainly with themselves. I highly recommend this book!

P.S. Idess's Daddy, is FINE!!!!

The Mysterious Benedict Society

The Mysterious Benedict Society Review

I originally discovered "The Mysterious Benedict Society" on a list of books for people who like "Harry Potter." What a fabulous discovery! I loved the story, the characters, the settings, the dialog--everything about the book. The book tells a tale of four children who, after many challenges, adventures, close calls, and last-minute rescues, save the world from the evil mastermind Mr. Curtain.

The story begins when Reynie Muldoon, an orphan who is clever enough to need a special tutor to engage his mind, reads a newspaper ad for "a gifted child looking for special opportunities". Responding to the ad, Reynie takes a series of tests to find out if those special opportunities might be for him. On completing the tests, Reynie and his three new friends Sticky, Kate, and Constance, meet Mr. Benedict, the author of the ad. Mr. Benedict tells the children of a great danger to the world: Mr. Curtain, who plans to take over the world via a machine that plants thoughts in people's minds. Furthermore, Reynie, Sticky, Kate, and Constance are the only ones who can stop the evil plot. To that end, the children enroll in the Learning Institute for the Very Enlightened--a school run by Mr. Curtain for the purpose of disguising his plot and for the easy access to children he can trick into working on his project.

With many riddles, puzzles, codes, and plot twists, "The Mysterious Benedict Society" is a brilliant page-turner. If you like Roald Dahl, you'll like this. The book is nicely written and fun to read. It has elements of science fiction, adventure story, school story, mystery, and probably several other genres. This is an excellent story populated by wonderful characters. It's definitely worth reading!

Book of Souls

Book of Souls Review

I know that we are still only in the first few weeks of spring, but I've just finished my first good summer book. "Book of Souls" is the sequel to "Secret of the Seventh Son" (which I read last year, and highly recommend). If you are a fan of Dan Brown, James Rollins, and the like - you are in the right place with "Book of Souls". If you are going to be stuck on a cross-country flight this week, you can easily sing your teeth in to "Book of Souls" and dispatch the time with ease. If you are going to be stuck at a family reunion over the weekend, this book is a perfect balm for hearing about Aunt Matilda's corn surgery for the 3rd time. If you are just sitting at home, feet up, television off, kids in bed, glass of wine on the coffee table next to you - this is a good book to have in your hands.

As I said, this is the sequel to "Secret of the Seventh Son". If you haven't read that book, you may still enjoy "Book of Souls", but you are going to miss a LOT of what is going on. So, go out, get "Secret of the Seventh Son" and give it a read. Don't worry - I'll wait...I'll be right here. Take your time.

Okay - all caught up? This story starts about a year after the close of "Seventh Son". After solving the Doomsday Killer case, Will Piper is now married to his former partner Nancy. Will has retired from the FBI, has a newborn son, and is trying to learn to be a good husband. That tranquility, however, is not meant to last. He receives a visit from two men who are part of the "2027 Club". They know that secrets that Will discover during the Doomsday case and they need his help in acquiring a rare book that has just come available at auction. That book is the key that will unravel Will's carefully built domestic life. Because of it, he is plunged headlong back in the conspiracy and adventure that he thought he had left behind.

Cooper does a good job of weaving the narrative between the present day and 16th century Europe, where we learn more about the mysterious Library and how it has influenced history. You see how it touched the lives of many from that time, including Calvin, Nostradamus, and even Shakespeare. This weaving of historical fiction and modern day thriller brings the rich back-story to life while adding an authenticity to the tale that will be familiar to fans of religious thriller genre.

My one and only complaint with the story has to do with the main character Will. Fair warning for all - THIS PARAGRAPH CONTAINS SPOILERS. If you don't want to know details on the story, skip ahead - okay? Commencing with spoilers in 3...2...1... In the middle of the book, Will travels to England to search from clues needed to solve the book's central mystery. Will has been, in the past, a heavy drinker and lady's man. While in England, he not only falls back in to drinking, he also has a brief affair with the woman helping him with his search. When the search is over, he goes back to America, and his wife. He does express some remorse, but he never discusses it with his wife (he does come clean on the drinking). In fact, the affair is not really addressed at all for the rest of the book. In reading some on Glenn Cooper, he's said that his heroes are all flawed. I can accept that, if the flaw in some way contributes to the story. Here, it just felt - well, it felt gratuitous. It didn't help the story in my mind, and it didn't make Will more authentic. It just made him a little more unlikable. It didn't ruin the book for me, it just felt unnecessary. Okay - SPOILERS ARE OVER.

I really enjoyed this book. It's an interesting take on the religious thriller genre, and raises some great questions about the nature of choice versus predestination in the world. Cooper leaves the end of the story wide open for another sequel and I hope he takes the opportunity to deliver one. I could see that book going quite a few different directions and would be anxious to see what Cooper would do next in the world that he has created.

Dominion (Ollie Chandler, Book 2)

Dominion (Ollie Chandler, Book 2) Review

This is my favorite book, and I'm a reader. Obviously I'm a Christian, but it goes beyond that. Alcorn writes a book from a black man's perspective so convincingly that I had to look at the jacket to find out if he was black or white. It's also a good murder mystery. However, the thing that makes it so unforgetable is the way the characters transition to heaven from earth. It changes your perception of heaven AND life on earth. I have read most of Alcorns work. All of it is exceptional. This is my favorite. Read it, you will be forever changed.

Dominion (Ollie Chandler, Book 2) Overview

Sweet Revenge?

When two senseless killings hit close to home, columnist Clarence Abernathy seeks revenge for the murders—and, ultimately, answers to his own struggles regarding race and faith. After being dragged into the world of inner-city gangs and racial conflict, Clarence is encouraged by fellow columnist Jake Woods to forge an unlikely partnership with a redneck homicide detective. Soon the two find themselves facing dark forces, while unseen eyes watch from above. This re-release of Randy Alcorn’s powerful bestseller spins off from Deadline and offers a fascinating glimpse inside heaven.

Can One Man’s Search for Justice Stand Up to the Forces of Evil Threatening to Destroy Him?

A shocking murder drags black newspaper columnist Clarence Abernathy into the disorienting world of inner-city gangs and racial conflict. In a desperate hunt for answers to the violence (and to his own struggles with race and faith), Clarence forges an unlikely partnership with redneck detective Ollie Chandler. Despite their differences, Clarence and Ollie soon find themselves sharing the same mission: victory over the forces of darkness vying for dominion.

Filled with insight—and with characters so real you’ll never forget them—Dominion is a dramatic story of spiritual searching, racial reconciliation, and hope.

I don’t know when I have read a novel that affected me so profoundly. Randy Alcorn has combined a superb mystery/detective story with a lesson in racial relations in America, gang dynamics and symbols, Christian values, and spiritual warfare.

—Dave Kirby, Troy (Alabama) Broadcasting Corporation

Even better than its predecessor…Alcorn’s writing remains top-notch.

Story Behind the Book

Randy Alcorn thoroughly researched his characters, spending time in the inner city with homicide and gang detectives to better create the scenes for this bestselling novel. He set the story in his hometown of Portland, Oregon, and the main character, Clarence Abernathy, is a black journalist whose unforgettable father played baseball in the old Negro Leagues. Randy has received many letters from readers who assume he is African American due to his accurate portrayals of racial issues.

A Passion Most Pure (Daughters of Boston, Book 1)

A Passion Most Pure (Daughters of Boston, Book 1) Review

Rarely do I read a book that interests me from the first page. This book is very romantic but also has an honest portrayal on how a young Christian woman gives every aspect of her life over to God's control. Romantic Christian fiction is often unrealistic to me and preachy, with the exception of very few authors such as Francine Rivers. The character Faith's relationship with God comes off very genuine and not preachy, and her choices in romance reflect her First Love. The attraction between Faith and Collin was well written and really fun to read! Lots of drama in this book, but if you are a romantic like me you will enjoy it!

A Passion Most Pure (Daughters of Boston, Book 1) Feature

  • ISBN13: 9780800732110

  • Notes:

A Passion Most Pure (Daughters of Boston, Book 1) Overview

Refusing to settle for anything less than a romantic relationship that pleases God, Faith O'Connor steels her heart against her desire for the roguish Collin McGuire. But when Collin tries to win her sister Charity's hand, Faith isn't sure she can handle the jealousy she feels. To further complicate matters, Faith finds herself the object of Collin's affections, even as he is courting her sister. The Great War is raging overseas, and a smaller war is brewing in the O'Connor household. Full of passion, romance, rivalry, and betrayal, A Passion Most Pure will captivate readers from the first page. Book 1 of the Daughters of Boston series.

Conversations With God : An Uncommon Dialogue (Book 2)

Conversations With God : An Uncommon Dialogue (Book 2) Review

I ordered this book and received it very quickly. The book was in great shape at an awesome price!! Very happy with the service.

Conversations With God : An Uncommon Dialogue (Book 2) Overview

Resuming the dialogue where Book 1 left off, Conversations with God, Book 2 moves from personal issues to more global and political concerns. Included are questions about the nature of time and space and human sexuality, as well as geophysical and geopolitical considerations of worldwide implication.

Conversations With God : An Uncommon Dialogue (Book 2) Specifications

In Conversations with God: Book II, Neale Walsch and God resume their discussion and move on to larger topics than the personal issues addressed in their previous dialogue in Volume 1. For an "unedited transcript" of a conversation, Book II is remarkably well organized and articulate, as if Walsch anticipatd our "but what about" questions before we asked them. The peculiar pair discuss time, space, politics, and even kinky sex, but Conversations with God: Book II isn't here for just shock value. It is an honest look at some of the broad issues important to all of us on the planet, and a suggestion of how things might go if we are all willing to open our minds and have our own conversations with divinity. --Brian Patterson
