First Spanish Reader: A Beginner's Dual-Language Book (Beginners' Guides) (English and Spanish Edition)

First Spanish Reader: A Beginner's Dual-Language Book (Beginners' Guides) (English and Spanish Edition) Review

I am still reading this little dual language book. I find it not only fun and entertaining, but also educational because besides learning the language you also learn about the local culture and peculiar language expressions or "old sayings" or proverbs.
The compendium of short stories is great because if you are short on time you can just read a couple of stories as opposed to read a long novel and then after you put it down you have to remember where you left it off when you resume your reading...
The small size is great too so you can enjoy it anywhere.
Do not expect however a literal translation. Sometimes I still need to look at the dictionary for the meaning of a specific word in sentences that were translated for their overall meaning, however it does not happen too often.
I think it is a good buy and certainly worthy the small price.

The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance 2

The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance 2 Review

Editor Trisha Telep has done it again, she's used her connections - and apparently her cyberstalking talents - to amass another BIG batch of vampire quickies - 25 in all. If you are a short story fan looking for a whole bunch of little reads perfect for squeezing into even the busiest of schedules, this is the book for you. Unlike its predecessor The Mammoth Book of Vampire Romance (Mammoth Books), not only are the majority of the stories presented here actually romances, but a good number of the authors successfully delivered tales complete with back story, hookup and at least the promise of a `happily-ever- after' in their small number of allotted pages.

Most of the stories here avoid the darker side of vamp romance but there are a few that shun the light. If you are an avid urban fantasy and paranormal romance fan like me, you'll recognize most of these authors, but even I discovered a few I hadn't read before. My favorites stories were the ones by Bacon-Smith, Stein, Trent and Aguirre. And though there didn't seem to be as many connected stories in this incarnation of the 'Mammoth Book' - quite a few of the authors seemed to be breaking into new territory - Ione's Demonica short was good too.

So here's just a few words each to give you an idea of what's lurking within MBofVR2's 556 pages.

1. Jordan Summers - "Paris After Dark" -- A NYPD cop broken by the loss of her partner, finds a new life in Paris after a run in with a vamp serial killer - While the heroine gets a resolution, I liked that Summers didn't try to force a HEA on the starring pair. She just delivered a romantic connection complete with hook-up and left the HEA to the readers imagination. (4 stars)

2. Deborah Cooke - "Coven of Mercy" -- An oncologist who refuses to ever quit the fight, learns of mercy from an unusual `angel' - The hero had potential but his part of the story was too brief to make up for the fact that, although she was fairly well developed, I just didn't connect with the heroine. (3 -stars)

3. Karen MacInerney - "Le Cirque de la Nuit" -- A circus aerialist whose performance stirs a hidden watcher, wants to go solo in the spotlight, but is she willing to pay the cost of succumbing to the dark allure of Le Cirque de la Nuit? - Not a romance, even though there is a sensuality to the woman's performance, vampire fans who like their vamps with bite will appreciate the dark HEA. (3 stars)

4. Caitlin Kittredge - "Perdition" -- Doc Holiday is a vampire slayer in the old west - The romantic elements of the story are told in flash backs, but for some reason this one just didn't grab me. - (3 stars)

5. Dina James - "Deliver Us From Evil" -- A fake psychic eases a vampire's hunger - I was hoping for a continuation of Jame's story from the Mammoth Book of PNR, so that may have colored my reaction. (3 - stars)

6. Camille Bacon-Smith - "Blood and Thyme" -- The owner of vampire catering company, whose servers are also the hordeuvres, needs to find a chef when human food is required on the menu for a special event - I just really liked this one, mostly because I liked the starring pair. Even so, I would have loved for this story to have been novella length, so that I could have seen more interaction between the leads and I would have loved to have seen a bit more of their HEA, there is just the promise of it here - (4.5 stars)

7. Rosemary Laurey - "Into the Mist For Ever" -- A roman soldier/medic falls for a warrior woman on the brink of a battle between her people and his - connected to her `Forever' Vampires series, we finally get Gywlth and Justin's story ( 3.5 stars)

8. Patti O'shea - "Blood Feud" -- A vamp enforcer is teamed up with her old demon lover to stop a war between their races - I liked this one and wished there was more (4 stars)

9. Angie Fox - "Love Bites" -- After her 879 year marriage finally ends, a vamp princess looks for love on a dating game show, only the sexy bachelor she chooses has other plans for their dream date - this one was fun, and who can resist a hero in a kilt - no brogue though, boo hoo. (4 stars)

10. Caitlin R Kiernan -"Flotsam" -- A man heeds a monthly call to attend an ancient one as she rises from her watery resting place - this story was previously published as "Not One of Us". Keirnan's style is poetic, but not enough actually happens here to satisfy me (3 stars)

11. Jamie Leigh Hansen - "The Murder King's Woman" -- A Vampire's 'pet' pulls off a daring rescue - the rescue was really well done, and I liked the heroine's plan for getting what she really wants. I'd read more vamps stories by Hansen, if she decides to write more. (4 stars)

12. Carole Nelson Douglas - "Butterfly Kiss" -- When tomcat Midnight Louie stumbles on a vampire at the edge of true death, Louie needs to call in someone with hands, and he knows just the someone - fellow PI Delilah. - This short brings Douglas' Delilah Street and Midnight Louie series together, the cat's eye view initially put me off of this one but story turned out to be cute and humorous. Though whereas I might checkout the Delilah books, this was more than enough of Louie here for me. (3.5 stars)

13. Diane Whiteside - "Crimson Kisses" connected to her Texas vampire series -- A young woman arranges to run off with her vamp lover, little realizing that the meeting place she has chosen will force her lover to violate a powerful vamps territory - if you are used to Whitside's Texas vamps, you are going to find this one very tame (3.5 stars)

14. Jaye Wells -"Vampsploitation" -- Sabina is on first assignment as an assassin - This is a prequel to Red-Headed Stepchild, and sets Sabina on her solitary path (3 stars)

15. Stacia Kane - "Trust Me" -- A woman becomes mistress to a mysterious man whom she suspects of being Jack the Ripper - this story fit the space and managed some steamy stuff along the way (4 - stars)

16. Jennifer Ashley - "The Scotsman and the Vamp" -- A vampiress leaves behind her betrothed to become a silent film star - I liked the flapper filmstar idea but the romance was just sort of generic (3 - stars)

17. Justine Musk - "I need More You" -- A vampire suffers from the continual abandonment of her angel lover but can't resist when he calls her to him once more - I read this one twice, mostly because I hit this part of the book when I was really tired and it required more careful reading than many of the others stories in the book. The story here is layered under the texture of the setting and there was much that I missed the first time through and I did actually end up liking it (4 stars)

18. Jennifer St Giles -"Point of No Return" -- He has watched from the shadows and fallen in love from afar with the woman who is equally smitten with the statue which bears his likeness. - There was much that I liked about this story, but I would have liked to have seen what St Giles would have done with this in novella length and more space to develop the leads and establish their connection a bit more gradually (3.5 stars)

19. Dawn Cook (aka Kim Harrison) -- "With Friends Like These" -- Hey what are friends for if not to help you with those pesky relatives? - This was not at all a romance, instead it features a vamp and his roomie bud, (3 stars)

20. Nancy Holder - "Blood Gothic" reprinted story -- A teacher dreams of a vampire lover who will offer her eternity - Not only is this reprinted but this is second anthology containing this story in the last month or so (By Blood we Live) - Is the vamp real or not? I didn't find this one engaging or like the ending when I read it in either of the anthologies - (2 stars)

21. Larissa Ione - "Eternity Embraced" - a Demonica short -- An Aegis vampire hunter embarks on a rescue mission knowing that, since vamps tend to 'turn' captured hunters, `saving' her partner/lover from a fate worse than death will likely require a stake - I really like Ione's series and this was a nice little tidbit not connected to the main series arc. This short works because of the already established connection between the leads and the fact that Ione doesn't try to force the ending which leaves the reader with the promise of more than could be delivered in this short space. (4 stars)

22. Jeanne C Stein - "The Ghost of Leadville" -- A vamp remembers the one that got away - this is the second Doc Holiday story in the collection but it was my favorite of the two and one of my favorites in the anthology. This is a short story that really works, Stein told the complete story effectively and even brought a few tears to my eyes ( 4.5 stars)

23. Tiffany Trent - "The Vampire, the Witch and the Yenko" -- Disguised as a mechanic, a witch who is undercover on a mission to take out a Mafioso magic theif who drains witches of their power, crosses paths with a male vamp who is being stalked by a female vamp in heat determined not to take no for an answer. But even though the witch's cover is blown, she just may have the solution to both of their problems - This is my first story by Trent but I thought story worked pretty well as a short, but that doesn't mean that I wouldn't have liked more. (4.5 stars)

24. Ann Aguirre - "Circle Unbroken" - Fascinated with her prey, a vampiress gets caught in her own trap - A slightly different take on vamps from Aquirre who manages to deliver a story and a romance that feels complete. (5 stars)

25. Devon Monk - "Skein of Sunlight" - A `yarn' about a cancer survivor and her chance to make new memories - I like Monk's writing and the hero and the attraction between the starring pair made this one work for me - (4 stars)

(2 stars - didn't like it ; 3 stars = ok; 3.5 = pretty good; 4 = liked it; 4.5 = really liked it; 5 stars = loved it)

Fancy Nancy Sees Stars (I Can Read Book 1)

Fancy Nancy Sees Stars (I Can Read Book 1) Review

Nancy is all excited because they are going to take a nighttime class trip to the planetarium. She just loves stars. Mrs. Glass, her teacher asked all kinds of questions about stars. There were pictures of the constellations on the wall and she was very anxious to see them. Robert, her friend, was going with her on this trip. They got on their T-shirts with glow in the dark stickers, spun the planet mobile and even baked star cookies. YUM!

Things started to go wrong. The babysitter was late and when they got in the car it started to rain. It rained and rained and the traffic was so bad they missed the sky show. "Drip, drip, drip go my tears. Robert and I are so sad. We do not even want any cookies." It was such a sad event to miss out on the class field trip, but as a consolation prize they watched the skies in their backyard. Wait, there goes a shooting star . . . now Nancy could make a wish. What would she wish for and would her wish come true?

True to form there are some "fancy" words in this Fancy Nancy book. This one is a bit different as it is not only an easy-to-read book, but also a primer on astronomy. Nancy and Robert learn about constellations, meteors, orbits, planetariums and star formations and the reader will learn right along with them. This Fancy Nancy was not quite as fun nor as silly as some of the others, but will most likely be enjoyed by its fans and perhaps picked up by those wishing to introduce a bit of astronomy in the homeschool or classroom setting.

Fancy Nancy Sees Stars (I Can Read Book 1) Feature

Fancy Nancy Sees Stars (I Can Read Book 1) Overview

Nancy absolutely adores stars. She loves how they sparkle in the sky, and she can even name the constellations. Nancy can hardly wait for her class visit to the planetarium!

Young readers will delight in this newest addition to the Fancy Nancy I Can Read series, sharing in Nancy's anticipation and disappointment when the trip doesn't go as planned. But with her trademark panache, Nancy manages to make even this frustrating situation fun—and, of course, fancy.

The Pink Fairy Book

The Pink Fairy Book Review

In the late 19th century, historian, scholar, and anthropologist, Andrew Lang, began publishing collections of fairy tales from around the world. The first volume was `The Blue Fairy Book' published in 1887. Lang was not a true ethnologist, like the German Brothers Grimm. He was far more the `translator' than collector of tales from the source, stories transcribed from being told by people to whom the tales were passed down by word of mouth. In fact, many stories in his first volume, such as Rumpelstiltskin; Snow White; Sleeping Beauty; Cinderella; and Hansel and Gretel were translated from Grimm's books of fairy tales. Some of his `fairy tales' were even `copied from relatively recent fantasy fiction, such as A Voyage to Lilliput, the first of the four episodes in Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels.
My inspiration for commenting Lang's series of fairy tale books is for the sheer quantity of tales, the wonderful woodcut illustrations, some few of which may have become almost as popular as the tales (although not quite in the same league as Sir John Tenniel's illustrations for Lewis Carroll's great fantasies), and the fact that I had these when I was young.
With twelve of these books, with between 30 and 36 stories in each book, this gives one about 400 different stories. If I were to recommend anything as standard equipment at a grandparents' house, it would be a complete set of these books.
Needless to say, there are a few `warnings' to accompany books assembled over 100 years ago. You will encounter a fair number of words with which even an adult may be unfamiliar, let alone a five year old. For example, on the second page of The Princess Mayblossom in The Red Fairy Book, a character puts sulfur in a witch's porridge. This requires at least three explanations. What is sulfur, what is porridge, and why is sulfur in porridge such a bad thing. More difficult still is when a prince entered the town on a white horse which `pranced and caracoled to the sound of the trumpets'. In 19th century London, caracoling (making half turns to the right and the left) was probably as common and as well known as `stepping on the gas' is today. But, if you're a grandparent, that's half the fun, explaining new words and ideas to the young-uns.
There is another `danger' which may require just a bit more explanation, although in today's world of crime dramas on TV, I'm not sure that most kids are already totally immune to being shocked by death and dead bodies. In these stories, lots of people and creatures get killed in very unpleasant ways, and lots of very good people and creatures suffer in very unpleasant ways. It's ironic that the critics in Lang's own time felt the stories were 'unreality, brutality, and escapism to be harmful for young readers, while holding that such stories were beneath the serious consideration of those of mature age'. The success of a whole library of Walt Disney feature length cartoons based on these stories is a testament to how well they work with children. But do be warned, Uncle Walt did clean things up a bit. Lang's versions hold back on very little that was ugly and unpleasant in some of these stories.
The down side to the great quantity of stories is that even when some come from very different parts of the world, there is a remarkable amount of overlap in theme, plot, and characters. But by the time you get to another story of a beautiful young girl mistreated by a stepmother, it will have been several month since you read Cinderella or the Little Glass Slipper in The Blue Fairy Book. The other side of the coin is that you can play the game of trying to recall what that other story was with a similar theme.
There is one very big word of caution about buying these books through Amazon or a similar on line outlet. I stopped counting when I got to twelve different editions of The Blue Fairy Book, or a volume including several of these books. Not all of these editions have the original woodcuts and even worse, not all have a table of contents and introduction. The one publisher which has all twelve volumes is by Dover. Other publishers, such as Flying Chipmunk Publishing (yes, that's it's name) also have all the original illustrations, table of contents, and introduction, but I'm not certain that publisher has all twelve volumes. Dover most certainly does, as I just bought all twelve of them from Amazon.
While I suspect these stories may have been `old hat' for quite some time, it may be that with the popularity of Lord of the Rings, the Narnia stories, and the Harry Potter stories, all of which have their share of suffering and death, that these may be in for a revival. Again, the main attraction is that for relatively little money and space, Grammy and Grandad get a great resource for bonding with children.

Montana Territory in 1883 was a dangerous place--especially for a blind woman struggling to make her way through an early winter snowstorm. Undaunted, Noelle Kramer fought to remain independent. But then a runaway horse nearly plunged her into a rushing, ice-choked river, before a stranger's strong, sure hand saved her from certain death.

And yet this was no stranger. Though she could not know it, her rescuer was rancher Thad McKaslin, the man who had once loved her more than life itself. Losing her had shaken all his most deeply held beliefs. Now he wondered if the return of this strong woman was a sign that somehow he could find his way home.

The Foxfire Book: Hog Dressing, Log Cabin Building, Mountain Crafts and Foods, Planting by the Signs, Snake Lore, Hunting Tales, Faith Healing, Moonshining Review

I was really glad to find this and other books in this series at such great prices. My husband just loves the Foxfire series of books on mountain lore. It is amazing what life was like in the Appalachia Mountains and just how they made a life for themselves and their families. I love all the quilting squares that are in this book. Some of them I haven't seen since I was a little girl and my grandmother made quilts. I plan tobuy my husband more of these books in the future since he loves them so much and you would be surprised at what you can learn from them that will help you in your day to day life even now.

The Little Book of Value Investing (Little Books. Big Profits)

The Little Book of Value Investing (Little Books. Big Profits) Review

This book provides a distilled education in value investing from one of the more accomplished practioners of the art. Browne argues that value investing consists of few a solid principles that can be implemented by anyone with an average IQ. He breaks value investing down into a few quantitative and qualitative steps. This consists of searching for companies where you can in essence buy a dollar for sixty cents while buying earnings on the cheap. Once you find these companies he explains how to evaluate their balance sheets and P&Ls. Following this quantitative filtering he provides a series of qualitative questions to further evaluate potential investment opportunities. He goes on to explain the benefits of looking beyond the US for investment opportunities and then imparts a dose of investing wisdom and some contrarian thoughts on portfolio management which I found highly refreshing. I think this book might serve as a good adjoining text to Joes Greenblatt's ROIC-earnings yield strategy, if you're otherwise sensibly uncomfortable with picking stocks from a screen without any further due diligence, which by the way, Browne strongly counsels against, and which he describes as a recipe for disaster.

The only reason I'm not giving this book five stars is because to date I have followed a successful passive indexed based investment strategy with a focus on asset allocation, ala William Bernstein. However, I've been thinking of devoting a small portion of my portfolio to individual stocks which is why I decided to read Browne's excellent little book.

The Little Book of Value Investing (Little Books. Big Profits) Overview

There are many ways to make money in today’s market, but the one strategy that has truly proven itself over the years is value investing. Now, with The Little Book of Value Investing, Christopher Browne shows you how to use this wealth-building strategy to successfully buy bargain stocks around the world.

The Dangerous Book for Boys

The Dangerous Book for Boys Review

You expect an author to defend his own work, but I've never seen it done better than Conn Iggulden does in Amazon's own official editorial review and interview posted right on this product page:

"I think we've become aware that the whole 'health and safety' overprotective culture isn't doing our sons any favors. Boys need to learn about risk. They need to fall off things occasionally, or--and this is the important bit--they'll take worse risks on their own. If we do away with challenging playgrounds and cancel school trips for fear of being sued, we don't end up with safer boys--we end up with them walking on train tracks. In the long run, it's not safe at all to keep our boys in the house with a PlayStation. It's not good for their health or their safety."

That's it in a nutshell. As some reviewers have had the (there's no other word for it) stupidity to complain about, there's NOTHING in this book that's REALLY dangerous unless you go about it stupidly or carelessly. For example you cannot put someone's eye out with an air rifle unless you, stupidly or carelessly, point it at them (or yourself) first.

Other reviewers have suggested buying other books instead. Fine and dandy, many of their suggestions have merit, but why do they have to be "instead"? For example a boy who is really into building things and would not be intimidated by very detailed instructions and diagrams might prefer something like The Boy Mechanic: 200 Classic Things to Build, but boys who are being allowed to use Daddy's tools for the first time might prefer to start with the simpler projects in here.

Joining the Boy Scouts and buying the current edition of the Boy Scout Handbook is another great suggestion, but why does it have to be "instead"? A Boy Scout could get a lot of good things out of this book, and joining the Boy Scouts is going to be a much larger investment in money (and time) than buying this book.

Some reviewers have complained about the fact that it is intended for boys. Not to be politically incorrect, but let's face reality here: most boys but only some girls are going to be interested in this sort of book, and those girls who ARE going to be interested in this sort of book will absolutely LOVE the fact that it is intended for the boys they will be outdoing at the activities described herein.

Some reviewers have complained about it being too "British".

Please.

I only wish it were possible to purchase the British editions easily and at a reasonable price (or at least SEE what was taken out); I'm rather curious.

Finally, some reviewers have complained about what was left out, and most of the things they complain about being left out arguably should have been included. However, if all of the things that shouldn't have been left out HAD been included, this would have been a hundred volume set.

The Dangerous Book for Boys Specifications

Equal parts droll and gorgeous nostalgia book and heartfelt plea for a renewed sense of adventure in the lives of boys and men, Conn and Hal Iggulden's The Dangerous Book for Boys became a mammoth bestseller in the United Kingdom in 2006. Adapted, in moderation, for American customs in this edition (cricket is gone, rugby remains; conkers are out, Navajo Code Talkers in), The Dangerous Book is a guide book for dads as well as their sons, as a reminder of lore and technique that have not yet been completely lost to the digital age. Recall the adventures of Scott of the Antarctic and the Battle of the Somme, relearn how to palm a coin, tan a skin, and, most charmingly, wrap a package in brown paper and string. The book's ambitions are both modest and winningly optimistic: you get the sense that by learning how to place a splint or write in invisible ink, a boy might be prepared for anything, even girls (which warrant a small but wise chapter of their own).

Questions for Conn Iggulden

Conn and Hal Iggulden are two brothers who have not forgotten what it was like to be boys. Conn taught for many years before becoming one of the most admired and popular young historical novelists with his Emperor series, based on the life of Julius Caesar, and his newly embarked series on Genghis Khan, while Hal is a theater director. We asked Conn about their collaboration.

Amazon.com: It's difficult to describe what a phenomenon The Dangerous Book for Boys was in the UK last year. When I would check the bestseller list on our sister site, Amazon.co.uk, there would be, along with your book, which spent much of the year at the top of the list, a half-dozen apparent knockoff books of similar boy knowledge. Clearly, you tapped into something big. What do you think it was?

Iggulden: In a word, fathers. I am one myself and I think we've become aware that the whole "health and safety" overprotective culture isn't doing our sons any favors. It's not good for their health or their safety.

You only have to push a boy on a swing to see how much enjoys the thrill of danger. It's hard-wired. Remove any opportunity to test his courage and they'll find ways to test themselves that will be seriously dangerous for everyone around them. I think of it like playing the lottery--someone has to say "Look, you won't win--and your children won't be hurt. Relax. It won't be you."

I think that's the core of the book's success. It isn't just a collection of things to do. The heroic stories alone are something we haven't had for too long. It isn't about climbing Everest, but it is an attitude, a philosophy for fathers and sons. Our institutions are too wrapped up in terror over being sued--so we have to do things with them ourselves. This book isn't a bad place to start.

As for knockoff books--great. They'll give my son something to read that doesn't involve him learning a dull moral lesson of some kind--just enjoying an adventure or learning skills and crafts so that he has a feeling of competence and confidence--just as we have.

Amazon.com: You made some changes for the U.S. edition, and I for one am sorry that you have removed the section on conkers, if only because it's such a lovely and mysterious word. What are (or what is) conkers?

Iggulden: Horse chestnuts strung on a shoelace and knocked against one another until they shatter. In the entire history of the world, no one has ever been hurt by a conker, but it's still been banned by some British schools, just in case. Another school banned paper airplanes. Honestly, it's enough to make you weep, if I did that sort of thing, which I try not to. Reading Jane Austen is still allowed, however.

Amazon.com: What knowledge did you decide was important to add for American boys? I notice in both editions you have an excellent and useful section on table football, as played with coins. Is paper football strictly an American pastime? I'm not sure I could have gotten through the fourth grade without it.

Iggulden: I like knowing the details of battles, so Gettysburg and the Alamo had to go in, along with the Gettysburg address, stickball, state capitals, U.S. mountains, American trees, insects, U.S. historical timelines, and a lot of others. Navajo code talkers of WWII is a great chapter. It probably helps that I am a huge fan of America. It was only while rewriting for the U.S. that I realized how many positive references there already are. You have NASA and NASA trumps almost anything.

As for paper football, ever since I thought of putting the book together, people keep saying things like "You have rockets in there, yes? Everyone loves rockets!" Paper football is the first American one, but there will be many others. No book in the world is long enough to put them all in--unless we do a sequel, of course.

Amazon.com: Do you think The Dangerous Book for Boys is being read by actual boys, or only by nostalgic adults? Have you seen boys getting up from their Xboxes to go outside and perform first aid or tan animal skins or build go-carts?

Iggulden: I've had a lot of emails and letters from boys who loved the book--as well as fathers. I've had responses from kids as young as ten and an old man of 87, who pointed out a problem with the shadow stick that we've since changed. The thing to remember is that we may be older and more cynical every year, but boys simply aren't. If they are given the chance to make a go-cart with their dad, they jump at it. Mine did. Nothing gives me more pleasure than to know the book is being used with fathers and sons together, trying things out. Nothing is more valuable to a boy than time with his dad, learning something fun--or something difficult. That's part of the attitude too. If it's hard, you don't make it easy, you grab it by the throat and hang on for as long as it takes.

The book is often bought by fathers, of course. Their sons don't know Scott of the Antarctic is a great adventure story. How could they if it isn't taught any more? Good, heroic stories don't appear much in modern school curriculums--and then we wonder why boys don't seem interested.

Amazon.com: And finally, on to the important questions: Should Pluto still be a planet? And what was the best dinosaur?

Iggulden: Pluto is a planet. I know there are scientists who say it isn't, but it's big enough to be round and it has a moon, for crying out loud. Of course it's a planet. Give it ten years and they'll be agreeing with me again.

As for the best dinosaur, it depends what you mean by best. For sheer perfection, it probably has to be the shark and the crocodile. Modern ones are smaller but their record for sheer survival is pretty impressive. I only hope humanity can do as well. The only thing that will stop us is worrying too much.

An Irish Country Courtship: A Novel (Irish Country Books)

An Irish Country Courtship: A Novel (Irish Country Books) Review

An Irish Country Courtship: A Novel (Irish Country Books) Overview

Welcome to the colourful Ulster village of Ballybucklebo, where two doctors work hand in hand to mend the bodies and spirits of the town’s diverse and engaging inhabitants. But who is looking after the wounded hearts of the doctors?

After less than a year, young Barry Laverty, M.B., is settling in to the village, with only a few months to go before he becomes a full partner in the practice. He’s looking forward to becoming a fixture in the community, until an unexpected romantic reversal gives him second thoughts. Will he truly be happy tending to routine coughs and colds for the rest of his career? After all, even when a more challenging case comes along, like a rare tropical disease, all he can do is pass it on to a qualified specialist or big-city hospital. As much as Barry enjoys the rough and tumble of life in County Down, is running a humble GP’s shop all he wants out of life?

Barry’s mentor, Doctor Fingal Flahertie O’Reilly, is going through some personal upheavals as well. After mourning his deceased wife for decades, he’s finally allowed a new woman into his life. But this budding courtship is not going over well with Kinky Kincaid, the doctors’ redoubtable housekeeper, who fears having her position usurped by O’Reilly’s new flame. Tact, diplomacy, and a fair amount of blarney may be required to restore peace to the household.

Meanwhile, life goes on in Ballybucklebo, presenting both doctors with plenty of distractions from their own troubles. From a mysterious outbreak at the local school to a complicated swindle involving an unlucky racehorse, the two partners will need all of their combined wit and compassion to put things right again--just in time for their lives to change forever.

Fade Out (Morganville Vampires, Book 7)

Fade Out (Morganville Vampires, Book 7) Review

I enjoyed this series, but it was getting a little too much lately, but finally, this book snapped it out of the over-the-top drama that made me tired mentally. This book was a good stand alone book (better than the others at least), and it did not end with a cliff hanger, which was a relief.

Spoilers coming up, so read on with caution!!!!!

In this book, Eve becomes friends with another goth named Kim, who is called the historian by the vampires because she is chronicling their history on video. However, she is actually using this as a way to shoot a reality show about Morganville. It becomes clear that she had help from a vampire or two when Claire and her friends discover that there are multiple cameras (almost 75) hidden throughout town and even in houses (Glass house included) and in restricted vampire only places. When Kim comes up missing from the play rehearsal that she is starring with Eve in the local theater, the group goes to Kim's house to find her. Instead, they find hidden cameras and discover the truth about Kim. They remove and destroy the cameras and the hard drives backing up the footage eventually. Later, they find Kim has been brain damaged by Ada. Ada was the secret one helping Kim, along with a few rogue vampires (Morley). Ada did this because she wants to take control of Morganville in her warped mind now that she has become defective through Myrnin's virus.

Ada has spent the entire book trying to kill Claire with spiders and vampires and sabotaging the portal travel. She has to be reset, and when she realizes that she is beyond repair, she commits suicide. It also turns out that Myrnin and Ada were deeply in love, and this is very sad character development since Ada dies in the end. Amelie is of little help herself, as she mourns for Sam, and even tries to commit suicide.

You get to see softer sides of the vampires, but ironically, Michael is slipping away from his softness and is slowly becoming less human. Also, Myrnin, even though healed, is still crazy and unpredictable. He is more of a murderer than he let on, virus or not. Oliver seems to have the hots for Amelie, who may or may not return the favor. He pushes her back in her normal mode of business by challenging her and keeping their cat and mouse game continuing.

The book ends with Morley making a pact with the group that if Claire cannot get them and other rogue vamps a pass out of town, they will kill them--in a month. Also, Monica is back to her mean self, and she is no longer meek. Michael gets a big break in his music career, and things begin to calm down in the human vampire equality pact.

The crazy thing--two sex tapes came out of the Glass House in this book. Funny, right?

Fade Out (Morganville Vampires, Book 7) Overview

Now Claire can actually concentrate on her studies, and her friend Eve joins the local theatre company. But when one of Eve's castmates goes missing after starting work on a short documentary, Eve suspects the worst. Claire and Eve soon realize that this film project, whose subject is the vampires themselves, is a whole lot bigger-and way more dangerous-than anyone suspected.

The New Baby

The New Baby Review

I bought 3 "new baby" books to prepare my toddler for the arrival of our new baby - they are 21 months apart in age. This book was by far his favorite. I think the illustrations, the pace of the story, and the language was very appropriate to this age (my son was 19 months old when the book arrived).

I think parents will like the book too. The story is simple with only a few sentances a page (if that) - so if you toddler likes to turn pages as much as mine - you don't feel like you just missed the entire story. The pictures are really detailed too, so if you want to improvise and add details to talk about whats going on, you can do that too.

For the price - this is a great book to give to any new big brother or sister.

Iron John: A Book About Men

Iron John: A Book About Men Review

Iron John is a book about the path that many men use to become a man. After reading the book I bought a copy for my brother. This book addresses many of the issues that I have dealt with on my own journey through manhood. Bly uses story and verse to give us examples on how to work through the journey.

Iron John: A Book About Men Overview

In this deeply learned book, poet and translator Robert Bly offers nothing less than a new vision of what it is to be a man.

Bly's vision is based on his ongoing work with men and reflections on his own life. He addresses the devastating effects of remote fathers and mourns the disappearance of male initiation rites in our culture. Finding rich meaning in ancient stories and legends, Bly uses the Grimm fairy tale "Iron John," in which the narrator, or "Wild Man," guides a young man through eight stages of male growth, to remind us of archetypes long forgotten-images of vigorous masculinity, both protective and emotionally centered. Simultaneously poetic and down-to-earth, combining the grandeur of myth with the practical and often painful lessons of our own histories, Iron John is a rare work that will continue to guide and inspire men-and women-for years to come.

Incubus Dreams (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, Book 12)

Incubus Dreams (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, Book 12) Review

I understand how some readers are frustrated since Anita truly has changed since the Vampire Hunter novels began. I just started reading them a few months back so I haven't had so much time in between readings like others have had to wait for the next book to be released. Maybe from my perspective, reading a book or two (and sometimes three) a month, I can see how each novel links to one another, how she hasn't just changed entirely overnight, and how she still struggles with her inner demons. She is evolving and I am totally hooked. Jean Claude is the same as ever, just opening up more, Richard is slowly but surely coming to his senses, Micah is Anita's rock, and Nathaniel is a little piece of her innocence. Asher and Damian have yet to develop a real place in her life but I'm sure there will come a time for that development. As far as I can see, each of the men in Anita's life represent a small part of her, and if they were all combined into one person, we'd come up with Anita. I think they balance her each in a different way. As for the police work and zombie raising, I still think the stories are solid. While there is less focus on her work, I don't have a problem with that at all. I didn't start reading these novels for dry crime stories, but for a mix of horror, romance, and mystery. I found of this in these books.

Incubus Dreams (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, Book 12) Overview

Anita is pushed to her limits-both professionally and passionately-when she is called in on what appears to be a case involving a vampire serial killer preying on strippers.

Incubus Dreams (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter, Book 12) Specifications

As Incubus Dreams opens, Anita Blake may be America's most powerful vampire hunter and necromancer. So it's no surprise that the Regional Preternatural Crime Investigation Team seeks her assistance when a St. Louis stripper is murdered and the evidence points to unusual serial killers: a group of seven vampires. It appears a master vampire has gone rogue--and may prove too powerful for Anita Blake, even if she can gain help from not only her vampire consort, Master of the City Jean-Claude, but from the wereleopard king Micah, her other lover, and the alpha werewolf Richard, her bitter ex-lover.

It would be an exaggeration to say that Laurell K. Hamilton's Incubus Dreams is just one sex scene after another. This twelth novel in her bestselling Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter series presents a wedding, a murder, and a lot of relationship angst before getting down and dirty on page 89; and the sex scenes pause on page 377 to let the mystery plot resume. The series deftly blends elements of alternate history, horror, romance, erotica, and mystery, but anyone reading Incubus Dreams for the murder plot is going to be frustrated. However, Incubus Dreams is a considerably stronger and more interesting book than its talky predecessor, Cerulean Sins, and fans will enjoy the many new developments in Anita's complicated love life. --Cynthia Ward

Drip, Drop (I Can Read Book 1) Review

My 15-month-old LOVES this book. If I say a line from it any time during the day, she fills in the blanks that I leave. I would recommend it for a variety of ages.

The Doctors Book of Food Remedies: The Latest Findings on the Power of Food to Treat and Prevent Health Problems - From Aging and Diabetes to Ulcers and Yeast Infections

The Doctors Book of Food Remedies: The Latest Findings on the Power of Food to Treat and Prevent Health Problems - From Aging and Diabetes to Ulcers and Yeast Infections Review

Prior to purchasing this book I posted a couple of comments below M. Gouin's three star review (who knocked it because it promotes milk as a healthy food). Now that I have had a chance to look it over I thought I would review it.

Over-all I like the book and would recommend it for just about everyone. Each easy to read chapter focuses on one specific food with a recipe at the end of each chapter. I haven't tried the recipes yet, but they look pretty good. There are a lot of health books available offering nutritional information that usually focus on supplements. And while I am a proponent of supplements, this book focuses on the specifics of food sources which should be our primary source of sound nutrition. Man will never be able to extract or create anything as perfectly as nature.

That said, I could not give it five stars because it comes from a highly commercialized viewpoint, very typical of Prevention Magazine, the editors of this book. IE: some of the otherwise great recipes promotes the use of microwaving - a very poor way to cook foods and one that should be avoided. It lists ingredients such as wheat germ - an old-school 'health food' known to go rancid so quickly that it may cause more problems than it's worth. But this is easy to ignore. The chapter on milk is lacking in any substantive recent research and, while not as old-school as 'milk is the devil' is still quite behind the latest info. (Please see my 2nd post under the comments of M. Gouin's review for details.)

Finally, the binding of this book was pretty cheap. The covers are thin and curl back away from the pages after only a short time of use. The inside is printed on cheap newsprint with uneven ink distribution (going from normal to very light, page-to-page). Although the ISBN's are identical, apparently I purchased a "discounted" copy (@ .99) so maybe the higher-priced version will be a better quality, and for that reason the number of stars I gave it did not reflect this. Also worth noting is the description says it was updated in 2008, but the copywrite inside the book shows 2007 (and is also reflected on the copywrite page of the "look inside" view on the Amazon website).

Other than this, I still recommend it because it contains a lot of useful information. But a better book, with a similar food-focus, is 'Secrets of Longevity: Hundreds of Ways to Live to Be 100' by Dr. Maoshing Ni.

Lost Scriptures: Books that Did Not Make It into the New Testament

Lost Scriptures: Books that Did Not Make It into the New Testament Review

I was surprised to learn of the variety of interpretations of Jesus and his teachings that were found in Middle Eastern scrolls buried for nearly two thousand years. This is a very scholarly but easily understood compilation of many books that were excluded for a variety of reasons from the New Testament canon. The renowned historian Bart Ehrman and others translated these ancient scriptures from the oldest known Greek, Coptic, Arameic, and Latin texts. An exciting eye-opener for me.

Lost Scriptures: Books that Did Not Make It into the New Testament Overview

While most people think that the twenty-seven books of the New Testament are the only sacred writings of the early Christians, this is not at all the case. A companion volume to Bart Ehrman's Lost Christianities, this book offers an anthology of up-to-date and readable translations of many non-canonical writings from the first centuries after Christ--texts that have been for the most part lost or neglected for almost two millennia. Here is an array of remarkably varied writings from early Christian groups whose visions of Jesus differ dramatically from our contemporary understanding. Readers will find Gospels supposedly authored by the apostle Philip, James the brother of Jesus, Mary Magdalen, and others. There are Acts originally ascribed to John and to Thecla, Paul's female companion; there are Epistles allegedly written by Paul to the Roman philosopher Seneca. And there is an apocalypse by Simon Peter that offers a guided tour of the afterlife, both the glorious ecstasies of the saints and the horrendous torments of the damned, and an Epistle by Titus, a companion of Paul, which argues page after page against sexual love, even within marriage, on the grounds that physical intimacy leads to damnation. In all, the anthology includes fifteen Gospels, five non-canonical Acts of the Apostles, thirteen Epistles, a number of Apocalypes and Secret Books, and several Canon lists. Ehrman has included a general introduction, plus brief introductions to each piece. This important anthology gives readers a vivid picture of the range of beliefs that battled each other in the first centuries of the Christian era.

Recent research is rapidly changing the diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of breast cancer. From guidance on screening techniques and benign disease to comprehensive and heartening advice on living with breast cancer, Dr. Love's book will be a priceless help to recovery on every level, medical, practical, and psychological.

Once again readers will lean with gratitude on the extraordinary empathy and expertise in the book that Newsweek called "One of the most complete and trustworthy books ever published on breast cancer."

Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book:4th Edition 2005 Specifications

Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book has been considered the bible of breast-care books since it appeared in 1990. In 1995, Love completely updated the book in a 600-page second edition, including new biopsy and screening methods, implants, the pros and cons of hormone therapy, new discoveries in breast-cancer treatment, and many other topics. Every chapter has been rewritten, with the exception of the anatomy chapter ("The breast, I'm glad to report, is still located on the chest!"). Love presents copious medical information in a simple, welcoming style, and plentiful illustrations make the information even clearer. About two-thirds of the book deals with breast cancer: risk factors, prevention, screening, diagnosis, staging, emotions, treatment options, surgery, alternative treatments, clinical trials, and more. But the book isn't just about breast cancer. It's also about breast development, physiology, bras, nursing, sexuality--if it has to do with breasts, Love discusses it. Love also debunks breast myths: underwire bras do not cause cancer, neither do bruises or injuries; "fibrocystic disease" isn't really a disease. The book includes a wealth of resources: books, treatment centers, and organizations (but no Web sites--perhaps in the third edition?). --Joan Price

Damn! Why Didnt I Write That?: How Ordinary People are Raking in $100,000.00 or More Writing Nonfiction Books & How You Can Too!

Damn! Why Didnt I Write That?: How Ordinary People are Raking in 0,000.00 or More Writing Nonfiction Books & How You Can Too! Review

I bought this book in 2006, because I was thinking about writing a book. It's now late 2009, and my first book just came out.

Damn! Why Didn't I... is largely responsible for both positives and negatives in my journey.

This book is well written. Marc McCutcheon has a vibrant vocabulary and writes in an entertaining manner. He defintely has a gift. This book gives the reader a good overall feel for the publishing industry.

The first serveral chapters focus on getting you hyped up to write a book...a little too hyped up. The author gives several pages of phenominal sales statistics for books that you wouldn't expect to sell that well. Unfortunately, he doesn't balance this list with the 70% of published books that fail to make a profit at all. These early chapters got me hyped-up with unrealistic expectations which were all but shattered when I came face to face with the publishing industry and learned of other authors' experiences.

The middle of the book, which guides the reader through the steps of getting a book written and published is much more helpful. It gives you what you need to get started. Although I recommend picking up additional books on writing book proposals, promotion, etc., so you may benefit from additional tips and viewpoints.

The chapter on promotion provides helpful tips, but also recommends some that are a waste of money. The author uses the Chicken Soup books as an example of great marketing, but fails to mention how much money the authors spent on promotion. Any half-decent book can be a best seller if you can afford big budget publicity campaigns. But most people reading this book cannot.

I recommend this book for anyone thinking of writing a book. It has a lot of great tips. But don't take everything it says as gospel.

Damn! Why Didnt I Write That?: How Ordinary People are Raking in 0,000.00 or More Writing Nonfiction Books & How You Can Too! Specifications

Forget everything you've heard about the travails of the freelance writer. In Damn! Why Didn't I Write That?, Marc McCutcheon contends that "you can learn the trade and begin making a respectable income much faster than most people think possible." To illustrate, McCutcheon lists 17 pages of bestselling titles, including Bear Attacks: Their Causes and Avoidance (150,000 copies sold) and Golfing, a humor book (525,000 copies sold). McCutcheon himself wrote a few well-chosen titles and claims to be "easily support[ing] a family of four, working part-time." How? Think niche, says McCutcheon. Think backlist. Think about perennially hot topics like dieting/weight loss, relationships, parenting, health, low-fat cooking, sex, spirituality, money/finances, cats, career and leadership, and computer and Internet. McCutcheon is quite helpful about things like contract negotiation, agents, proposals, and promotion. He also confers a real can-do attitude on his readers. "In the corporate world," he says, "tall, beautiful people rule. In the writing world, even Yoda can climb to the top of the success ladder." --Jane Steinberg

The Help

The Help Review

I very much enjoyed reading this book but in the end I cannot give it a five-star review. In my opinion, Stockett did a marvelous job creating the main characters, who leap off the page and convey so much warmth and humanity. They are layered and interesting, and their relationships have the ring of truth. And though the author makes a few small historical errors, overall her portrayal of Mississippi in the early 1960s is very convincing, with its bizarre social rules and deep-seated hypocrisy. The book is a page-turner and, mostly, a delight.

But several aspects of the novel don't work for me at all, and lessen the book's impact quite a bit.

For one, I simply cannot buy that Minny, for ages, pretty much got away with the so-called Terrible Awful, which the despicable Hilly knew about from the get-go. That is wholly inconsistent with the world as it is depicted, in which whites cruelly punish blacks for small, even imagined slights. Yet we are to believe that powerful, vindictive, take-no-prisoners Hilly was satisfied merely to malign Minny's reputation after such a mind-boggling insult? I don't buy it. In fact, the entire pie storyline struck me as a contrivance so the book would include a shocking element to get readers buzzing.

I was also disappointed with the Stuart / Miss Skeeter love affair, such as it was. I kept being told how desirable Skeeter found Stuart, even after his appalling behavior the first time they meet, but why? He comes off as a privileged narcisstic boor who, by the way, drinks too much. Finally, Skeeter seems to recognize that he's not worthy of her attention, and it's a rewarding twist when we learn that Skeeter's mother actually is not that keen on him, either. Great! So why, then, does Skeeter say yes to his eventual marriage proposal? And why does her mother regret that Stuart will not be her son-in-law? Why isn't Skeeter, who we see has backbone, the one to walk away? That's not the Skeeter we've gotten to know, and I don't buy that, either.

Finally, I agree with the readers who commented that the story fizzled out, despite all that rich and vivid terrain. This book stands on an epic stage, and early on I would have thought I'd be crying buckets at the end. But while I wished the characters well and hoped for the best for them, when I turned the final page, I felt their drama ultimately didn't deliver much emotional punch.

The Help Overview

Three ordinary women are about to take one extraordinary step.

Twenty-two-year-old Skeeter has just returned home after graduating from Ole Miss. She may have a degree, but it is 1962, Mississippi, and her mother will not be happy till Skeeter has a ring on her finger. Skeeter would normally find solace with her beloved maid Constantine, the woman who raised her, but Constantine has disappeared and no one will tell Skeeter where she has gone.

Aibileen is a black maid, a wise, regal woman raising her seventeenth white child. Something has shifted inside her after the loss of her own son, who died while his bosses looked the other way. She is devoted to the little girl she looks after, though she knows both their hearts may be broken.

Minny, Aibileen’s best friend, is short, fat, and perhaps the sassiest woman in Mississippi. She can cook like nobody’s business, but she can’t mind her tongue, so she’s lost yet another job. Minny finally finds a position working for someone too new to town to know her reputation. But her new boss has secrets of her own.

Seemingly as different from one another as can be, these women will nonetheless come together for a clandestine project that will put them all at risk. And why? Because they are suffocating within the lines that define their town and their times. And sometimes lines are made to be crossed.

In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don’t.

Fancy Nancy: The Show Must Go On (I Can Read Book 1)

Fancy Nancy: The Show Must Go On (I Can Read Book 1) Review

Nancy is excited about the up-coming school talent show, until she learns that instead of being partners with her best friend, she has to be partners with Lionel, a boy that she doesn't really know. Lionel is shy, and doesn't seem to like any of the things that Nancy does. Her parents suggest that Nancy spend time with Lionel so that she can discover what they do have in common. During a visit to Lionel's house, Nancy learns that he loves lions, and from that their talent show act is created.

This makes for a great early reader for first and second grade girls. The story is enjoyable and easy to understand. Nancy's "fancy" language will help children learn new vocabulary words. The artwork is colorful and fun to look at. I would recommend this book for all Fancy Nancy fans.
