The Mass Book for Children

The Mass Book for Children Review

This is a really cute book that explains the mass very well. I was only a little disappointed that it wasn't more step by step through the mass. I enjoy reading it to my kids before Mass but it is not a follow along with the mass kind of book. I am still looking for a great one of those. I had one when I was a little girl and it is falling apart so I can't give it to three kids to read during church.

The River Cottage Meat Book

The River Cottage Meat Book Review

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and use it as reference often. However, the title, "MEAT," set in type that dwarves litterally every other title on my book shelves, implies a kind of comprehensiveness that the book does not deliver.

I'm not complaining that there are no recipes for Tibettan yak or rattlesnake. I'm talking about something more general. As most know, Fearnley-Whittingstall is a huge proponent of artisinal, natural farming. It's a great cause, and an approach worth supporting, but I believe mindless adherence can lead you into a couple of quagmires.

First is an idealogicall / political one, which is beyond the scope of this review, and probably also beyond the scope of the Meat book, although it needs to be acknowledged: we don't have enough pasture land on Earth to feed 6 billion people, or even 3 billion, using artisinal methods. It's a terrible truth, but it means we need to think in terms of reforming our broken industrial agricultural system, not just abolishing it (or worse, ignoring it).

Second, and more to the point, is the very complex subject of beef. Fearnley-Whittingstall talks in terms of pastured, grass-finished beef to the exclusion of all others. This reinforces the false dichotomy that cows are either grass fed/artisinal/good or corn fed/industrial/bad.

Well, it just doesn't work like that. I've been researching top quality beef for many months, and have found (and tasted) a whole world of variations. There are cattle raised on pasture land their whole lives but have their diets supplemented with grains during the last months of their lives. There are cattle who spend their lives in large pens, away from pasture, getting fed controlled mixtures of cut grass, hay, alfalfa, corn, and barley. There are the famous cattle of Kobe who get fed god-knows-what (but it includes barley and beer).

All these approaches yield delicious, first rate beef. All are artisinal. All raise healthy, happy cattle. And all are ignored by Fearnley-Whittingstall's book. I happen to like his style of pasture raised beef--If raised well (not a given) it produces fresh herbal flavors, that vary with season and terroir. But this beef is only sometimes my first choice. It lacks the marbling, succulence, and deep "beefiness" that can be produced in meat that's been fattened with grains.

So what? My concern is that some complex issues, ones that matter to anyone concerned with the planet or with good eating, get overly simplified in the book. It still owns a place of prominence among my shelves, but I'm looking for a more comprehensive reference to fill in some of the (big) gaps.

What else? Recipes? They're there if you you're looking for a recipe book, and I trust they're fine examples of country meat cookery. I suspect, though, the unique value of this book is as a reference on buying meat and understanding its sources and all the steps from farm to table.

The River Cottage Meat Book Overview

"This book aims to help you find good meat, understand it better, cook it with greater confidence, and eat it with much pleasure." It first of all covers the basics - everything you'll need to know about choosing the very best raw materials, understanding the different cuts and the cooking techniques associated with each of them. I've then given what I hope are foolproof recipes for 150 meat classics from both British and foreign food cultures - shepherds pie, steak and kidney pie, roast pork with perfect crackling, glazed baked ham, Irish stew, roast grouse with all the trimmings, toad in the hole, oxtail stew; plus definitive, authentic versions of pot au feu, cassoulet, choucroute, steak tartare, coq au vin, bolito misto, pasticcio, jerked pork, feijoida, cozido, curried goat, satay and chilli con carne. "I would like this book to be your first stop on the shelf whether you seek either inspired recipes or technical guidance on any aspect of meat cookery" - Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.

The Book of Lost Things

The Book of Lost Things Review

This idea has been done before, no question, but I'm a sucker for twisted fairy tales, and this book really nails that, many times over. I was under the impression that it's a YA book, but I'm not sure that I would give it to a kid. It's *very* dark and gruesome in places, and there are issues in play that younger kids won't pick up on. There are definitely subjects in there - loss, sexuality, growing up - that I got a lot more out of at 22 than I would have at 15.

The format - multiple traditional stories embedded in Davids' own story - makes for very easy reading. It's almost episodic, but each story builds on the next, so that there's simultaneously good character development and a buildup of tension - you really want to know how David's fairy tale ends. Given the endings that Connolly adds to, say, The Three Surgeons, there's actually quite a bit of tension. No one in this world lives happily ever after.

There's quite a bit of extra material at the end - notes about the book interspersed with the classic versions of all the fairy tales that David encounters along the way. It's worth a read, especially for the bits of analysis that Connolly does on the main themes. The little tidbits of history behind the stories are interesting, too. Definitely recommended.

Good lines:

"At last he fell asleep, and he dreamed of his father, and of Rose and his new half-brother, and of things that burrowed up from beneath the earth, waiting for the fears of others to give them shape."

"He had quite liked the dwarfs. He often had no idea what they were talking about, but for a group of homicidal, class-obsessed small people, they were really rather good fun."

The Book of Lost Things Feature

The Book of Lost Things Overview

High in his attic bedroom, twelve-year-old David mournsthe death of his mother, with only the books on his shelf forcompany. But those books have begun to whisper to him in thedarkness. Angry and alone, he takes refuge in his imaginationand soon finds that reality and fantasy have begun to meld. Whilehis family falls apart around him, David is violently propelledinto a world that is a strange reflection of his own -- populatedby heroes and monsters and ruled by a faded king who keeps hissecrets in a mysterious book, The Book of Lost Things.

Taking readers on a vivid journey through the lossof innocence into adulthood and beyond, New York Timesbestselling author John Connolly tells a dark and compelling talethat reminds us of the enduring power of stories in our lives.

Barnyard Bath

Barnyard Bath Review

Ok, this is a great bath time book. Not much to read but it's bigger in size than most and it comes with an adorable little wash cloth. We have 6 books that we read in the bath tub and this is the last one we read. My 12 month absolutely loves it. When it's time to read this one, she reaches for the cute cloth that came with it. I made the mistake of letting her use soap when she washes each barnyard animal so we kind of waste a lot of soap but it's all worth it because she has so much fun making suds and washing each animal. Great Book!!!

Barnyard Bath Overview

Here comes BarnYard Bath! It’s a waterproof cousin of Barnyard Dance—the famous board book bestseller. And what could make tub time more fun than a book? Especially one that floats. Because let's face it, board books are highly impractical in the tub. Safety-tested, nontoxic, and so much fun—just like Bath Time!, Boynton's first bath book.

Eugenie found herself Queen of Thorn Land after killing it's last owner, she's no where near happy about it, but her sense of responsibility gets her to come back of Otherworld once in a while to make sure her land doesn't perish without her around. While travelling to visit Kiyo's pregnant ex, Eugenie discovers that her subjects are tortured by famine and aridity. But it's not the only extend of their problems; young girls have been disappearing for quite a while now. The Queen is gonna takes matters in her hands and do all she can to help her people, but it won't be easy task.

Her love life is no where near easy either. She's in a relationship with Kiyo but have an hard time making her mind around the fact that he is spending a lot of time with is pregnant ex (who wouldn't) and about to have a baby of his own, while she won't allow herself to have one scared to fulfill the prophecy. Dorian is still around, poking in her life and teasing her like he can so well! Nothing to ease matters!

Did I ever mention how I LOVE Richelle Mead's books? Well this is no exception! Storm Born was great but Thorn Queen is awesome! Eugenie is facing so many questions and moral issues it's a wonder she is still sane. Dealing with her sister, her lovers, her land, demons and humans problems, Eugenie got her plate full. But it's not gonna stop her and that's what I like about the girl; her insecurities are so real to. I was also really fond of Dorian in Storm Born and now I'm in love with the guy! He is just awesome.

If you haven't started this series yet, well run and go buy it! now! Beware that this isn't a young adult series and there are some pretty steamy sex scenes to provide you very neat images *winks*

My First Body Board Book (My 1st Board Books)

My First Body Board Book (My 1st Board Books) Review

To me, this book is boring, just photos of babies (and not all of them are even cute!) crawling, walking, eating, etc.

But my one year old son LOVES this book and brings it to me to read over and over (and over) again. He loves looking at the babies and holding his hands and feet up to compare with the hands and feet in the book.

And I must admit, this is pretty educational because I am reading him the list of his body parts over and over again. I can only assume he is getting something from that! I recommend this for ages 9 months thru 24 months.

Adobe InDesign CS4 Classroom in a Book

Adobe InDesign CS4 Classroom in a Book Review

I am very pleased with the Adobe InDesign Classroom in a Book. Until I used this book (and the Illustrator Classroom in a Book), learning Adobe CS4 seemed overwhelming and I was afraid it would take me forever to figure it out on my own. Now, I look forward to each new lesson. Classroom in a Book breaks learning InDesign into small, easy-to-digest, bites and the lessons are fun, interesting, and instantly inspire me to apply the techniques to my own work. I think this inspiration factor is why I like this series so much better than the other tutorial books I've purchased. Perhaps it has something to do with the kind of work I do, which involves technical report writing. By the way, I haven't found anything wrong with this book, contrary to what some of the other reviewers have said--I'm glad I didn't listen to them.

The Grim Grotto (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 11)

The Grim Grotto (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 11) Review

This is possibly the best book in the entire series, in my opinion. Maybe it's the fact that I'm a water baby. Or maybe I'm a sucker for geeky people. Or maybe I just think the mystery, drama, and humor in this one was excellent! Whatever the reason, this was a series highlight for me.

And to think it all takes place underwater on a submarine known affectionately as the Queequeg, where there dwells its captain and his ambiguous stepdaughter, characters that help drum out mysteries galore and some of the best characterizations I've seen outside the main people.

The description is better than anything previously written in the series, and the emotion and characterizations will zap you right in the heart. And to end it all with some more amazing cliffhangers.

I will always think of this particular installment with great fondness.

The Grim Grotto (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 11) Feature

The Grim Grotto (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 11) Overview

Dear Reader,

Unless you are a slug, a sea anemone, or mildew, you probably prefer not to be damp. You might also prefer not to read this book, in which the Baudelaire siblings encounter an unpleasant amount of dampness as they descend into the depths of despair, underwater.

In fact, the horrors they encounter are too numerous to list, and you wouldn't want me even to mention the worst of it, which includes mushrooms, a desperate search for something lost, a mechanical monster, a distressing message from a lost friend, and tap dancing.

As a dedicated author who has pledged to keep recording the depressing story of the Baudelaires, I must continue to delve deep into the cavernous depths of the orphans' lives. You, on the other hand, may delve into some happier book in order to keep your eyes and your spirits from being dampened.

With all due respect, Lemony Snicket

The Grim Grotto (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book 11) Specifications

It's tough when the things that stand between you and your desired sugar bowl are a host of deadly mushrooms and an uncomfortable diving suit. The unlucky Baudelaire orphans find themselves in deep (once again) in this eleventh book in Lemony Snicket's odd-and-full-of-woe-but-quite-funny Series of Unfortunate Events. In The Grim Grotto, the siblings find themselves headed down Stricken Stream on a broken toboggan when they are spotted by the submarine Queequeg, carrying Captain Widdershins, his somewhat volatile stepdaughter Fiona, and optimistic Phil from Lucky Smells Lumbermill. The adventures that follow as the crew tries to get to the aforementioned sugar bowl before Count Olaf are so horrible that the narrator inserts factual information about the water cycle so that readers will get bored and stop reading the book. It doesn't work. As per usual, readers will want to soak up every awf! ul detail and follow the Baudelaires all the way back to the place we first met them--Briny Beach. The Book of Awakening: Having the Life You Want by Being Present to the Life You Have

The Book of Awakening: Having the Life You Want by Being Present to the Life You Have Review

A beautiful gift for yourself or a loved one. Dated daily essays to ponder along with daily exercises to strengthen those spiritual muscles. I'm admittedly a biased huge fan of Mark's writing. I've never bought a daybook before and didn't realise that's what this was when I purchased it. If I'd known I might have missed out on a treasure. It is structured with dates but there is no year so this book can be read and re-read year after year and I'm sure each read will reveal another level of wisdom. If you're on the fence about making this purchase, I'm sure you won't be sorry if you decide yes, and there's no reason to wait until the beginning of a year to buy it.

Encompassing many traditions and voices, Nepo's words offer insight on pain, wonder, and love. Each entry is accompanied by an exercise that will surprise and delight the reader in its mind-waking ability.

The Book of Awakening: Having the Life You Want by Being Present to the Life You Have Specifications

The time when we walk in the shadow of death is, ironically, a time when we feel illuminated by life's true meaning. Poet and philosopher Mark Nepo has firsthand experience with this mystery--he had cancer. During his arduous recovery, he sought inspiration and guidance that would reflect his growing appreciation of life. Although this daybook is exactly what Nepo longed for as he struggled with a difficult disease, , it can be appreciated by all readers.

This collection of essays, one for every day from January 1 through December 30, offers a poet's sensibility and sensuality and gives the reader Nepo's well-harvested wisdom. "Water reflects everything it encounters," Nepo writes in a May 5 essay. "This is so commonplace that we think water is blue, when in fact it has no color.... But the water, the glorious water everywhere, has taught me that we are more than what we reflect or love. This is the work of compassion: to embrace everything clearly without imposing who we are and without losing who we are." After each entry, Nepo offers a short list of suggestions or questions to help carry the essay into the day. There are many inspirational daybooks out there. What sets this one apart is the mature poet's voice rising from a seasoned soul. --Gail Hudson

The Supernatural Ways of Royalty: Discovering Your Rights and Privileges of Being a Son or Daughter of God

The Supernatural Ways of Royalty: Discovering Your Rights and Privileges of Being a Son or Daughter of God Review

Don't be arrogant! Don't be proud! Don't sin! Don't even think about sinning! Was that a bad thought? Oh no! I blew it. I'll never get it right...

If we've had a lot of teaching like that presented to us VIGOROUSLY (if you know what I mean...), we can end up in a constant state of self-doubt, self-questioning, self-recrimination and fear of self-exposure. And we haven't got a clue as to why we keep on making decisions that don't work out very well for us!

So is that you? Read this book. In fact, absorb this book! Infuse its truths into every waking moment of your life!

Kris Vallotton takes straight-forward Biblical statements and through them, shows how God wants us to know how He sees us, how we get off course when we don't know who we are in Him, how we have been denying the world the impact we could make as sons and daughters. It is the kind of book that, taken seriously, can and will change your life. I've read it several times myself and given it away several more.

There's nothing in it that is scary or false or strange; it will just introduce a Christian reader to a new look at things we've all heard hundreds of times. It's a wonderful book! You have a treat in store.

Saving the World (Maximum Ride, Book 3)

Saving the World (Maximum Ride, Book 3) Review

I recently downloaded the Kindle app for my iPhone and found James Patterson's "The Angel Experiment" as a free download. I began reading it and about 6 hours later I was done. I downloaded book #2 and two days later found myself downloading book #3 "Saving the World." I have been very impressed with the way Patterson has made this fiction series so entertaining and fun to read. I also highly recommend that anyone with an iPhone check out the Kindle app. Reading small portions of text in this format make reading so much easier, quicker, and fun.

I have been quite pleased with the way Patterson lets you get to know his characters. I find myself starting to develop a bond with them and when they find themselves in trouble, which happens frequently, I feel as though I am right there with them.

While "Saving the World" is more focused on global warming and other environmentalist causes than previous books, it is a very exciting and quick read. I recommend it to anyone that enjoys good fiction.

The final volume in the series drawn by Tove Jansson

Moomin Book Five: The Complete Tove Jansson Comic Strip
features the final strips drawn by Tove Jansson and written by her brother Lars for the London Evening News, before Lars took over both the art and the writing. The first “Moomin Winter” returns with more unwanted guests than in Book One, especially the curious and secret-spilling Nibling, sending the Moomin household into a tizzy of secrecy and closed doors. In “Moomin Under Sail,” theMoomins find themselves without a new adventure until Too-Ticky’s compass gives them the idea to build a boat and head to sea. Finally, we meet the Fuddler in “Fuddler’s Courtship.”Mymble captures poor Fuddler’s heart, and his bumbling drives her straight into the arms of Dr.Hatter, the local psychiatrist. How Do Dinosaurs Play With Their Friends

How Do Dinosaurs Play With Their Friends Review

Like the whole series of these books, How Do Dinosaurs Play With their friends?' is great. The illustrations are quite involved & detailled & from age 2&1/2 children study them & notice new things. Our children have loved all the books & always grasped the concept of how is one meant to behave? - with friends in this case, at the doctors, going to bed etc in the other books. Our 8 & 6 year olds still like to listen when given the opportunity.

How Do Dinosaurs Play With Their Friends Overview

What if a dinosaur's friends come to play?

Does he mope, does he pout if he can't get his way?

Does he hide all his dump trucks, refusing to share?

Does he throw his friends' coloring books up in the air?

Time and time again, children are told to "play nice." This brilliantly illustrated board book is packed with rhymes that will teach children how. Mark Teague's laugh-aloud illustrations, along with Jane Yolen's playful text, will show children that "playing nice" can be easy and fun. Perfect for parents to read aloud with their children, this book is as humorous as it is instructive.

Richard Scarry's A Day at the Airport (Pictureback(R))

Richard Scarry's A Day at the Airport (Pictureback(R)) Review

I recently purchased this for a plane trip that I was going to fly solo with my 2 year old son. This size it great for traveling. Big enough to see all the intricate illustrations but small enough to fit into a bag. Also it has a soft cover and is very light weight. Now the important part, my son loves this book. It was great for keeping him entertained in the airport. I would point out things in the book and then show him the same things in the airport. Lot's of fun and now he has something to remind him of the trip.

The Little Book That Builds Wealth: The Knockout Formula for Finding Great Investments (Little Books. Big Profits)

The Little Book That Builds Wealth: The Knockout Formula for Finding Great Investments (Little Books. Big Profits) Review

If Michael Porter's "Competitive Advantage" can be seen as the first book that conclusively illustrates "managerial" competitive advantage, Pat Dorsey's "The Little Book That Builds Wealth" can be seen as the first book that conclusively illustrates "investing" competitive advantage (I do not regard Warren Buffett's annual reports as a book). Many people invest by reacting, "My brother-in-law recommended it" or "I read about it in Money". It's also easy to get distracted by daily price gyrations and pundits who pontificate about short term market swings. Far better to have a conceptual anchor to help you evaluate stocks and build a rational portfolio. That's when investing competitive advantage, what Warren Buffett calls economic moats are invaluable. This book primarily deals with businesses that can generate above-average profit for many years, despite intense and constant competitive threats. Return on capital is the best benchmark of a company's profitability. It measures how effectively a company uses all of its assets - people, factories, investments - to make money for shareholders. Companies with strong competitive advantage can regularly post return on capital at 20+ percent, which is a rate of return very few money managers can achieve over long periods of time. This book provides a sensible framework for identifying companies that can sustain high return on capital. It tells the reader how to look for durable competitive advantage in choosing equities. The 4 sources of competitive advantage are: (1). Intangible assets; (2). Switching costs; (3). Network effects and (4). Cost advantage. These 4 sources of competitive advantage are elaborated throughout the book. Digest this book and you will develop a solid foundation for making smart investing decisions.

The Little Book That Builds Wealth: The Knockout Formula for Finding Great Investments (Little Books. Big Profits) Overview

In The Little Book That Builds Wealth, author Pat Dorsey—the Director of Equity Research for leading independent investment research provider Morningstar, Inc.—reveals why competitive advantages, or economic moats, are such strong indicators of great long-term investments and examines four of their most common sources: intangible assets, cost advantages, customer-switching costs, and network economics. Along the way, he skillfully outlines this proven approach and reveals how you can effectively apply it to your own investment endeavors.

The Brown Fairy Book

The Brown Fairy Book Review

In the late 19th century, historian, scholar, and anthropologist, Andrew Lang, began publishing collections of fairy tales from around the world. The first volume was `The Blue Fairy Book' published in 1887. Lang was not a true ethnologist, like the German Brothers Grimm. He was far more the `translator' than collector of tales from the source, stories transcribed from being told by people to whom the tales were passed down by word of mouth. In fact, many stories in his first volume, such as Rumpelstiltskin; Snow White; Sleeping Beauty; Cinderella; and Hansel and Gretel were translated from Grimm's books of fairy tales. Some of his `fairy tales' were even `copied from relatively recent fantasy fiction, such as A Voyage to Lilliput, the first of the four episodes in Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels.
My inspiration for commenting Lang's series of fairy tale books is for the sheer quantity of tales, the wonderful woodcut illustrations, some few of which may have become almost as popular as the tales (although not quite in the same league as Sir John Tenniel's illustrations for Lewis Carroll's great fantasies), and the fact that I had these when I was young.
With twelve of these books, with between 30 and 36 stories in each book, this gives one about 400 different stories. If I were to recommend anything as standard equipment at a grandparents' house, it would be a complete set of these books.
Needless to say, there are a few `warnings' to accompany books assembled over 100 years ago. You will encounter a fair number of words with which even an adult may be unfamiliar, let alone a five year old. For example, on the second page of The Princess Mayblossom in The Red Fairy Book, a character puts sulfur in a witch's porridge. This requires at least three explanations. What is sulfur, what is porridge, and why is sulfur in porridge such a bad thing. More difficult still is when a prince entered the town on a white horse which `pranced and caracoled to the sound of the trumpets'. In 19th century London, caracoling (making half turns to the right and the left) was probably as common and as well known as `stepping on the gas' is today. But, if you're a grandparent, that's half the fun, explaining new words and ideas to the young-uns.
There is another `danger' which may require just a bit more explanation, although in today's world of crime dramas on TV, I'm not sure that most kids are already totally immune to being shocked by death and dead bodies. In these stories, lots of people and creatures get killed in very unpleasant ways, and lots of very good people and creatures suffer in very unpleasant ways. It's ironic that the critics in Lang's own time felt the stories were 'unreality, brutality, and escapism to be harmful for young readers, while holding that such stories were beneath the serious consideration of those of mature age'. The success of a whole library of Walt Disney feature length cartoons based on these stories is a testament to how well they work with children. But do be warned, Uncle Walt did clean things up a bit. Lang's versions hold back on very little that was ugly and unpleasant in some of these stories.
The down side to the great quantity of stories is that even when some come from very different parts of the world, there is a remarkable amount of overlap in theme, plot, and characters. But by the time you get to another story of a beautiful young girl mistreated by a stepmother, it will have been several month since you read Cinderella or the Little Glass Slipper in The Blue Fairy Book. The other side of the coin is that you can play the game of trying to recall what that other story was with a similar theme.
There is one very big word of caution about buying these books through Amazon or a similar on line outlet. I stopped counting when I got to twelve different editions of The Blue Fairy Book, or a volume including several of these books. Not all of these editions have the original woodcuts and even worse, not all have a table of contents and introduction. The one publisher which has all twelve volumes is by Dover. Other publishers, such as Flying Chipmunk Publishing (yes, that's it's name) also have all the original illustrations, table of contents, and introduction, but I'm not certain that publisher has all twelve volumes. Dover most certainly does, as I just bought all twelve of them from Amazon.
While I suspect these stories may have been `old hat' for quite some time, it may be that with the popularity of Lord of the Rings, the Narnia stories, and the Harry Potter stories, all of which have their share of suffering and death, that these may be in for a revival. Again, the main attraction is that for relatively little money and space, Grammy and Grandad get a great resource for bonding with children.

Home Vegetable Gardening: A Complete and Practical Guide to the Planting and Care of All Vegetables, Fruits and Berries Worth Growing for Home Use (Forgotten Books)

Home Vegetable Gardening: A Complete and Practical Guide to the Planting and Care of All Vegetables, Fruits and Berries Worth Growing for Home Use (Forgotten Books) Review

This book can be very useful for the small space gardener as it discusses at length, basics of gardening. Anywhere the book describes use of horses, logic would indicate that a tiller of varying sizes could be substituted. Crop rotation is also discussed, and multiple acres are not needed for this.
I enjoyed the instructions on constructing a manure-driven hotbed. This was the way it was done before electric seedling heat mats were around. Also prepping sods for seed starting. It reminded me of the way things were done years before pellet pots, plastic seed flats and cell packs were common.
The book is old enough to resurrect much of the forgotten techniques used by our grandparents and great-grandparents -of the way things were, the way things could be again for those trying to garden more naturally and self-sufficiently... not buying everything from the garden store. It might also be helpful for the budding survivalist who no longer wants to rely on manufactured products.

I found the list of seed varieties in the book to be fascinating. Recognizing many of the listed varieties to still be available today. It was neat to see some of the Heirloom seed choices i made were also the Author's picks.

The age of the book in most cases matters very little when it comes to gardening basics, things don't change much at all. In fact, this book might be better for beginners since it is a book that encourages a do-it-yourself and a 'from the ground up' tone. It is almost void of any pre-made devices and there are no gimmicky products being hocked.
The old standby tools are recommended, time tested and readily available.

My only real problem with the book at all is that the rewrite of the eBook version omitted a number of images and pictures that would have been helpful. But a quick internet search of the names of the described items in most cases will quickly locate images.
The book itself is full of sound instruction, good logic and the author has a friendly writing style.

The book is about 100 years old and free... just download it already. It is well worth the time spent to read it.

Home Vegetable Gardening: A Complete and Practical Guide to the Planting and Care of All Vegetables, Fruits and Berries Worth Growing for Home Use (Forgotten Books) Overview

A vegetable garden (also known as a vegetable patch or vegetable plot) is a garden that exists to grow vegetables and other plants useful for human consumption, in contrast to a flower garden that exists for aesthetic purposes. It is a small-scale form of vegetable growing. A vegetable garden typically includes a compost heap and several plots or divided areas of land, intended to grow one or two types of plant in each plot. Many families have home kitchen and vegetable gardens that they use to make food. In World War II, people had gardens called a 'victory garden' which provided food to families and thus freed up resources for the war effort.

With the increased interest in organic and sustainable living, many people are turning to vegetable gardening as a supplement to their family's diet. Food grown in your own backyard, uses up little if any fuel for shipping, and the grower can be sure of what exactly was used to grow it. Organic horticulture, or organic gardening, has become increasingly popular for the modern home gardener.

There are many types of vegetable gardens. Potagers, a garden in which vegetables, herbs and flowers are grown together, has become more popular than the more traditional rows or blocks. (Quote from wikipedia.org)

The Dangerous Book of Heroes

The Dangerous Book of Heroes Review

I picked this book up for my teenage son. Back in the day he really enjoyed The Dangerous Book For Boys --2008 publication.and I thought he might like this book as well. He set about reading the book as soon as it arrived and greatly enjoyed most of the stories, particularly those dealing with military campaigns (The Few: The Royal Air Force and The Marines at Iwo Jima) and adventure (Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay). The stories are brief, twenty five pages or less, and kept his interest. Of course this is a far different book from The Dangerous Book for boys and will appeal to an older audience.

Interesting snippets from extraordinary lives.

Richard Scarry's Best First Book Ever!

Richard Scarry's Best First Book Ever! Review

While there are some oddities in the book (like the parents sleeping in separate beds and Mommy Cat always wearing a dress), it's still a good and solid introduction for vocabulary building. Every page has every item labeled in a variety of situations and places: home, the kitchen, the living room, the laundry room, school, the grocery store, an ice cream parlor, and so forth. It also introduces the basic parts of the body, color theory and counting.

Richard Scarry's books often times contain a running gag of some sort. In Cars and Trucks and Things That Go, readers are asked to find Gold Bug on every page. In this book, readers can follow Mr. Fumble as he tries to catch his windblown hat.The question of where's Mr. Fumble's hat and the often times surreal things depicted and labeled are what make these books so much fun to read.

Silver Borne (Mercy Thompson, Book 5)

Silver Borne (Mercy Thompson, Book 5) Review

I can always count on Patricia Briggs to write a story that I have to read from start to finish - without stopping! Silver Borne is a perfect example of that.

Mercy always seems to find herself in dicey situations. She's a coyote shapeshifter mated to the werewolf Alpha, which sort of makes her Alpha female by default & the werewolves aren't all happy about that. She has friends who are prone to getting into trouble and in Silver Borne, of course someone does exactly that.

Mercy's friend Phin loans Mercy a book and then disappears. He sends her a message via a mutual friend to "take care of the thing I gave her." Mercy knows the only thing is the book, so she tries to find Phin - which is how she finds out he has gone missing. She hides the book and then tries to find out what happened to her friend.

While she's busy with that, her long-time friend, Samuel, who is a werewolfe, tries to kill himself. As werewolves age they sometimes lose control of themselves and Samuel is afraid of that. He also feels that he has no place in the world and that his work, as a doctor, doesn't really help anyone. Sounds more like basic loneliness to me. In any event, Samuel's wolf takes over and Mercy has to hide him. If it becomes known that the wolf is in charge, the powers that be (namely Mercy's mate and the Marrok - sort of the President of the werewolves) will kill him.

Along the way, Mercy gets into and out of trouble, someone tries to set Adam up to be killed, the mother of Mercy's teenage employee - Gabriel - refuses to let him work there any more and, oh, yeah, someone in the Pack is trying to get rid of Mercy.

What I love about the Mercy series is how Mercy herself, I guess. She's someone I would want to know - except that she would drive me to drink! Such a good heart but so stubborn and not trusting. As the series goes along, Mercy is developing more fully as a woman and she is learning to trust not only Adam but herself. And the Pack.

Every time a new Mercy book comes out, I want to re-read the entire series so I can remember who everyone is relative to everyone else. The downside to reading as much as I do is that I get fuzzy on the details. I have a sister who can remember every single character and their significance in each of the 1000-page + books in Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. I'm lucky to remember the main characters and the primary secondaries! These books are so good, though, that I want to remember who everyone is and how they relate to Mercy because I root for Mercy and I want to know who is on her side and who isn't.

If you haven't read any of the rest of the series, I highly recommend that you begin at the beginning with Moon Called. This book can be enjoyed if you have no background because Briggs is excellent at filling in details but I think that having the background will make things make more sense.

The Knitter's Book of Wool: The Ultimate Guide to Understanding, Using, and Loving this Most Fabulous Fiber

The Knitter's Book of Wool: The Ultimate Guide to Understanding, Using, and Loving this Most Fabulous Fiber Review

I have a large collection of knitting books - both pattern and technique. I LOVE this book, and have learned SO MUCH about the different attributes of various wool breeds and the results that can and do impact the yarns, and hence the knitted products. Even looking at the drawings of the various breeds - it is sometimes difficult to believe they are all sheep.

In addition to the great education about wool, which has already helped me in making better choices for projects, there are some wonderful classic patterns I am enjoying.

A great addition to your knitting or fiber library!

The Knitter's Book of Wool: The Ultimate Guide to Understanding, Using, and Loving this Most Fabulous Fiber Feature

  • Weight: 1.1 ounces

The Knitter's Book of Wool: The Ultimate Guide to Understanding, Using, and Loving this Most Fabulous Fiber Overview

In this complete guide to wool - the most popular yarn around - passionate wool expert Clara Parkes translates the vast world of sheep and their wool into the language and context of knitting.

What is wool? Clara starts with the fundamentals: what wool is made of, how it gets off the sheep, and how it is transformed from a jumbled mass of dirty fluff into a gorgeous yarn that so tempts us at our local yarn stores.

Who makes it? Parkes conducts an inspiring tour of sheep breeds from around the world - introducing us to the animals who give us their wool - and explains how to best knit with yarns made from their fibers.

Which yarn do I use? If only there were a way to read a skein to know how it would behave and what it wanted to become. Now there is! Parkes demystifies the generic (non-breed-specific) wool yarn you'll find at your local yarn shop, showing you how to best determine what every yarn longs to be.

What do I knit? Parkes went to some of the most creative and inquisitive design minds of the kniting world to provide more than 20 patterns that highlight the qualities of specific types of wool.

The Knitter's Book of Wool teaches you everything you need to know about wool - and its journey from pasture to pullover. The next time you pick up a skein, you won't have to wonder what to create with it. You'll just know.

Piano Adventures Lesson Book, Level 1 (Faber Piano Adventures)

Piano Adventures Lesson Book, Level 1 (Faber Piano Adventures) Review

I've been teaching for over 12 years and I use the Faber Piano Adventure series, starting with Primer level for young students, usually 5-7 years old. For younger students, (preK/K), see Music for Little Mozarts by Alfred. For more information see piano and voice teacher drives 2 you web site.

The primer level starts slowly, but shows overall good use of the keyboard, even before the student starts learning the note names. Working on the black keys for a few weeks gives young fingers the opportunity to play sooner, and gain coordination. These books come in a system that you can self select, definitely start with the Lesson book. I always recommend the recital book for extra songs (no one wants to play or hear the same four to eight measure song over and over again for a week between lessons, too much repetition leads to boredom). I love the Popular Repertoire series in all the levels of the books. Just look at the covers for names of the songs. They are all well known tunes the students love. These have come and gone out of print, but have recently come back into print.

I use the Faber books as a bridge with another series called Alfred Basic Piano library. If students find Alfred's pace challenging, Faber helps fill in the gaps. It also teaches "Middle C position" where both thumbs are on middle C (the singing range of most young children), on the staff earlier in the primer level. This allows use of the fabulous set of Faber books in the Pre-time (primer), Playtime (level 1 five finger melodies), Showtime (level 2A-just outside the comfort zone), Chordtime (2B-wait for fingers to mature to play 3 note chord progressions-but are really the best in the series), Funtime (3-more challenging) and Big Time (usually used around level 4-5). These come in a variety of genres like Classical, Popular, Jazz, Ragtime, Rock, Children's Favorites, Hymns, (Hebrew Favorites only in Chordtime), I like to use as many as possible in the early years and then focus in on what student shows an interest in for later study.

Later versions of the Faber books teach higher notes on the treble staff that Alfred misses. But the Alfred books are very good at teaching intervals sight reading. My feeling about these books is that you want more books that keep the pace nice and even, if there are a few songs that seem too similar, and the student is ready to move on, move on, but more often than not, the extra songs give a student many opportunities for sight reading, which is really what I try to teach. Try starting 5 min per year old for the lesson and 1 song per year old per week, and see how it goes. A five year old can sit and play for 1/2 hour on about 5 short pieces, with some singing, clapping, and other activities. Whereas a nine year old can sit for about 45 minutes, and has no problem with 9-10 songs a week.

Give your child the gift of reading music as you would reading books.

Piano Adventures Lesson Book, Level 1 (Faber Piano Adventures) Overview

Level 1 introduces all the notes of the grand staff, elementary chord playing, and the concept of tonic and dominant notes. Students play in varied positions, reinforcing reading skills and recognizing intervals through the 5th. Musicianship is built with the introduction of legato and staccato touches. This level continues the interval orientation to reading across the full range of the Grand Staff. The 5-finger approach is presented here in a fresh, musically appealing way.

The Social Media Marketing Book

The Social Media Marketing Book Review

Social media marketing is big business. All of the social media web sites are awash with companies trying to use them to sell their products and services. In many cases these campaigns are ill-conceived and end up annoying more people and driving them away from the company in question.

It's not that social media marketing is particularly difficult. It's just that it's a new area and it's very easy to get something wrong and to end up doing more harm than good. The users of social media services tend to be a little more clued-up than the general population and they are often suspicious of traditional marketing methods. I'm sure we can all recite horror stories of internet marketing campaigns that have backfired badly.

Dan Zarrella knows what he's talking about though. He knows how to tiptoe around the minefield that is social media marketing without stepping on any of the minds. If all of the people currently trying to use Facebook and Twitter as a marketing tool would stop and spend a couple of hours (yes, it's a very short book) reading Zarrella's book then their campaigns would all be of a higher quality and they'd have a lot more success.

Zarrella covers all the bases in his discussion of social media tools. He goes from blogging and Twitter to video sharing and Second Life. On the way he shares all the nuances that he has picked up whilst working with these various tools. Each chapter discusses a particular area in some depth and the final two chapters step back from the detail to have a look at strategy and measurement.

The precise sites that we'll be using in the future will no doubt change. It's quite likely that won't still be using Twitter in three years time, but Zarrella's advice is likely to still hold true as the underlying principles will still be appropriate.

If you're planning a social media marketing campaign then it'll be well worth your while reading this book.
