The Dalai Lama's Little Book of Inner Peace: The Essential Life and Teachings

The Dalai Lama's Little Book of Inner Peace: The Essential Life and Teachings Review

No matter what your belief system, The Dalai Lama is a man to be respected. His life has served as an example of peace and the willingness to speak up for the betterment of all people. His life story is extremely interesting: born into a large peasant family, discovered to be the reincarnation of The previous Dalai Lamas, trained to be a monk, and then forced to leave his home so that he could bring his words to the world.

The Dalai Lama's Little Book of Inner Peace covers a wide variety of topics including some of The Dalai Lama's childhood memories and concerns as he faced exile. Other sections detail the political upheaval in Tibet and the greater global issues that need to be addressed. For those new to Buddhism, The Dalai Lama introduces key concepts.

The Dalai Lama's Little Book of Inner Peace is a fascinating book. I feel like I have a greater insight into The Dalai Lama both as a world leader and as a man.

The Goodnight Train

The Goodnight Train Review

My twin two-year-old sons love this book. They request it for story time before bed nearly every night. The illustrations are beautiful and so intricate that the boys find something new to look at every night. Some of the images are silly, like a pig dressed as a porter taking a bubble bath in a bath shaped train car. At first, I thought it wouldn't keep their attention because it was whimsical, but that seems to be exactly what they enjoy about it. There are enough recognizable images, such as sheep, tunnels, houses, and toothbrushes, that they spend time investigating each page. A fun and creative book.

With soothing, lyrical words and magical illustrations, June Sobel and Laura Huliska-Beith have created a nighttime fantasy that's guaranteed to make even the most resistant sleeper snuggle up tight.

Alfred's Basic Piano Course Recital Book (Alfred's Basic Piano Library)

Alfred's Basic Piano Course Recital Book (Alfred's Basic Piano Library) Review

I was really hesitant about this piano teaching series because it starts out numbering the fingers instead of teaching notes. However, I am now a believer. My six year old moved quickly through the material and didn't lose interest mostly because she started with the numbered fingers and progressed from there. I highly recommend these books as an effective system for teaching piano.

Richard Scarry's Cars and Trucks from A to Z (A Chunky Book(R))

Richard Scarry's Cars and Trucks from A to Z (A Chunky Book(R)) Review

What a cute little book! I first read it to kids when I was working in a church nursery, and I found it so effective at entertaining small children that I bought a copy for myself for when I babysit. Small children seem fascinated by all the different types of cars, and the small sturdy pages make it perfect for them to look through themselves if they want to. a good investment for a childrens' book collection.

The "What's Happening to My Body" Book for Girls, Revised Third Edition (What's Happening to My Body?)

The "What's Happening to My Body" Book for Girls, Revised Third Edition (What's Happening to My Body?) Review

Okay, I looked at a lot of books for this topic before deciding on this one. I have to say, personally - I would not have read it in the order it's presented. I wish I had taken more time when it came to look through the book before starting it with my daughter. My daughter is 10 and I would have started with the breast development, puberty growth spurt, and a few others - not here are all your parts, the boy parts, and this is sex! However, if you're getting this for an older girl that's already gone through the puberty phase and is wondering about sex that might be what you're looking for (and then I imagine she may not be as interested in the other chapters I mentioned). All in all, this gives a lot of very good information, explained well, and has simple diagrams. So far, my daughter loves it when we read it. It's something I keep in my room and when it's time I read it with her (to be able to talk or answer questions more). I don't recommend reading this in the order it's presented, but I think I already said that. : )

The "What's Happening to My Body" Book for Girls, Revised Third Edition (What's Happening to My Body?) Feature

  • ISBN13: 9781557047649
  • Condition: NEW
  • Notes: Brand New from Publisher. No Remainder Mark.

The "What's Happening to My Body" Book for Girls, Revised Third Edition (What's Happening to My Body?) Overview

The bestselling guides for preteens and teens updated with a brand-new look.

The Madaras growing-up guides are acknowledged by parents, educators, librarians, and doctors for their unique, nonthreatening style, excellent organization, and thorough coverage of both the physical and emotional issues surrounding puberty and adolescence. And kids love them too! As one fan wrote, "Dear Lynda, I can't believe that you, a mom, knew all this stuff!"

"What's Happening to My Body?" for Girls features detailed coverage, in age-appropriate language, of the body's changing size and shape, the growth spurt, the reproductive organs, the menstrual cycle, romantic and sexual feelings, puberty in the opposite sex, and much more. Includes a comprehensive resource section and line drawings. For ages 10 and up.

The new editions feature:
• Fresh new cover design for series
• Entirely redesigned interiors with new illustrations
• Uniform trim sizes for display
• New author introductions
• Updated resource sections and content
• 50 black-and-white drawings

The "What's Happening to My Body" Book for Girls, Revised Third Edition (What's Happening to My Body?) Specifications

"I kept wanting it to happen. When it did I remember thinking, 'It's about time.'"

"I was worried at first. Then it really wasn't so bad after all."

"I remember my brothers weren't allowed to hit me in the chest anymore. I was kind of pleased about that."

What mysterious condition are these now grown-up girls talking about? Ah, yes, puberty! With scads of personal stories and an abundance of useful, detailed information about girls' changing bodies and feelings, author Lynda Madaras and her daughter Area Madaras have expanded their guide for girls on the verge of change. First published in 1983, the bestselling classic has been revised and updated several times over the years to keep up with ever evolving facts and wisdom about puberty in girls. In this third edition, the authors continue their straight talk on the menstrual cycle, reproductive organs, breasts, emotional changes, puberty in boys, body hair, pimples, masturbation, and all the other fun, scary, and interesting things that go along with growing up. Filled with anecdotes, illustrations, diagrams, and honest, sensitive, nonjudgmental information for the young girl, the revised edition also addresses the new scientific facts about when a girl actually begins puberty (earlier than previously thought), advice on "female athletic syndrome," eating disorders, unwanted attention because of early development, and information on eating right, exercise, AIDS, STDs, birth control, and so much more. A welcome, reassuring book for parents and daughters, designed with the understanding that some girls and parents will want to read it together, and some will want to read it on their own; without a doubt, though, all will benefit. Got boys? Don't miss What's Happening to My Body? Book for Boys. (Ages 8 to 15) --Emilie Coulter

The Book of Right and Wrong (Ohio State Univ Prize in Short Fiction)

The Book of Right and Wrong (Ohio State Univ Prize in Short Fiction) Review

The Book of Right and Wrong (Ohio State Univ Prize in Short Fiction) Overview

Matt Debenham’s stories are for people who think they don’t like short stories. These stories don’t leave off in mid-breath; instead, they feature characters who seem to live on even after their closing pages. The humor in The Book of Right and Wrong makes the jarring moments that much more jarring, and the tender moments that much more tender.
At once heartbreaking and hilarious, the eleven stories in The Book of Right and Wrong capture their characters at the defining moments of their lives. A mother finds herself defending her son’s biggest bully from a tormentor of his own; a young man watches as his cape-wearing former high-school classmate proves himself more adept at making friends; a social worker gambles everything on expediting an adoption—and causes unforeseen consequences for every person in her life; a boy standing in for Jimmy Carter in his elementary school’s mock-election inadvertently starts a bloody playground war; an ex-con single father finds himself on the inside of his town’s social circle, with no clue as to how the game is played.
With lively storytelling and empathy to spare, The Book of Right and Wrong defies the notion that full, memorable characters live only in novels.

The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel

The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel Review

Ooh, ever since I read Harry Potter I've been intrigued by this whole Nicholas Flamel legend. So much so that I even wrote a paper about it. Now that there's a book series about it, I had to get my hands on it.

For the most part it was pretty interesting seeing how the author weaved history into his books. I liked his magic system and how each individual has their own unique smell and their own colored aura. It was also pretty fast paced so you probably won't get bored. Right from the first chapter it starts off with explosions and high speed chases, so it's got what you need right there.

But the biggest fault of this book is that it's very cliché. The whole twins becoming the special ones mentioned in the prophecy, the only ones who can save the world, and having special powers that are very strong sort of turned me off. Also, the brother, Josh, annoyed the heck out of me.

Near the end he did/thought the most dumbest things. I mean, I get questioning the true motives of your would be savior/person that you're following but then your sister?! Right after she does something big in the exact opposite of what you were thinking? WHAT?

The writing is decent. It started off with a bang and then sort of tapered off by the first battle and became a lot more simplistic. It was more of a listing of events than an engrossing scene. Everything throughout this whole book takes place in just two days which is really unrealistic to me. I doubt people would be even standing if they were constantly attacked non-stop.

Not bad.

The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel Overview

He holds the secret that can end the world.

The truth: Nicholas Flamel was born in Paris on September 28, 1330. Nearly 700 years later, he is acknowledged as the greatest Alchemyst of his day. It is said that he discovered the secret of eternal life.

The records show that he died in 1418.

But his tomb is empty.

The legend: Nicholas Flamel lives. But only because he has been making the elixir of life for centuries. The secret of eternal life is hidden within the book he protects—the Book of Abraham the Mage. It's the most powerful book that has ever existed. In the wrong hands, it will destroy the world. That's exactly what Dr. John Dee plans to do when he steals it. Humankind won't know what's happening until it's too late. And if the prophecy is right, Sophie and Josh Newman are the only ones with the power to save the world as we know it.

Sometimes legends are true.

And Sophie and Josh Newman are about to find themselves in the middle of the greatest legend of all time.

The Discipline Book: How to Have a Better-Behaved Child From Birth to Age Ten

The Discipline Book: How to Have a Better-Behaved Child From Birth to Age Ten Review

This is not an easy way to parent a child even though most of the stuff in here is common sense stuff like, "Hey, you shouldn't let your baby cry." and, "Babies like to be held." and, "You shouldn't let your child disrespect you or others."

There are a lot of people who have a problem with things that the Sears say in this book like that mothers should stay at home with their babies if possible. Maybe that's true, maybe that's not, but because I may not agree with that for our family, doesn't make me discount this essential (yes, I said it) book. This book will help you turn out a compassionate, thinking child. And Dads? Well, if one can merely substitute "father" when the book says, "mother" or "parent", then YOU CAN USE THIS BOOK TOO.

There are also a lot of people who think that the Sears' appear "holier-than-thou" in this book. I think that they are merely giving personal experiences of their techniques in action and I mean, I'm the one who bought the book, so am I not paying for this author's expertise? It makes no sense for me to resent the author of a parenting book for appearing to be a more diligent practitioner of his and her own parenting technique.

Here's the thing. This book helped me to understand my children and to know them. That's really the key. I didn't stay at home with our children (back to school at 5 months with our first, back to work at 4 weeks with our second, and back to work at 10 weeks with our third), we don't like a family bed (we like to have sex, I'm not going to lie), but we go back to this book at least once a month to help us with discipline situations.

This book did not make me a perfect parent, but it gave me the confidence to be the perfect parent for our family.

The Discipline Book: How to Have a Better-Behaved Child From Birth to Age Ten Feature

The Discipline Book: How to Have a Better-Behaved Child From Birth to Age Ten Overview

From the bestselling authors of The Baby Book and The Birth Book comes The Discipline Book, the definitive guide to raising happy, well-adjusted, well-behaved children. Seasoned parents of eight, Bill and Martha Sears draw on personal experience and their professional knowledge as childcare experts to provide an authoritative approach to a broad range of disciplinary issues and practices.

With focus on preventing behavior problems as well as managing them when they arise, the Searses offer clear, practical advice on everything parents need to know about disciplining young children. Believing that discipline starts at birth, the Searses discuss baby discipline, disciplining the toddler, mother-father roles in modern parenting, saying no, self-esteem as the foundation of good behavior, helping a child to express feelings, the constructive use of anger, good nutrition for good behavior, and sleep discipline.

On handling problem behavior, the Searses cover sibling rivalry, spanking and alternatives to spanking, breaking annoying habits, and eliminating bothersome behaviors like whining and talking back. The Searses strongly advocate teaching children values like apologizing and sharing, and explain how to deal with such issues as lying, stealing, and cheating. In addition, the Searses address building healthy sexuality and discipline in special situations such as after divorce and in the single-parent household.

The Real Book of Real Estate: Real Experts. Real Stories. Real Life.

The Real Book of Real Estate: Real Experts. Real Stories. Real Life. Review

Some of the reviews of Robert's books and articles from some people remind me of the saying. "People have the right, to remain stupid." Robert is a teacher of wealth's truths. I understand them and I am applying them to my families lives and so do others. I am glad Robert has a deaf ear to these criticisms. One day the light bulb will go off in the non believers. By then it will be to late to start over again. I would rather listen to a rich person who has done it, that a person who hasn't.

That's why there are companies that print books. To share the knowledge of someone who has done great things with their life. Because I believer that, "If I do what the rich do, I too will get the same results!" Just copy Robert and get the same results... That's how simple it is, Robert has even written down for you. To apply it to your life, you can even teach your children because you will already have the books!

The Real Book of Real Estate: Real Experts. Real Stories. Real Life. Feature

The Real Book of Real Estate: Real Experts. Real Stories. Real Life. Overview

The Real Book of Real Estate is the one book, the Bible, of real estate advice and techniques every investor needs to navigate through the ups, the downs, and the in-betweens of the real estate market and come out on top.

For the first time ever, Robert Kiyosaki, bestselling author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad, has assembled in one big book a star studded cast of real estate wizards and trusted advisors with one purpose in mind: to share their knowledge to help you win in real estate.

This is the ultimate real estate desk reference you’ll come back to again and again. Whether you’re a seasoned investor or buying your first property, you will enhance your knowledge and grow your wisdom through this book. The book shows you how to value a property, handle leases, manage tenant relationships, get financing, even establish your own team of advisors, and so much more. Men's Health: The Book of Muscle--The World's Most Authoritative Guide to Building Your Body

Men's Health: The Book of Muscle--The World's Most Authoritative Guide to Building Your Body Review

I'm almost done with the Beginner Program from the book and I have probably picked up about 5 pounds of muscle in about 4 months. Previously, I have completed Power 90 (to lose weight) and I've done P90X twice (for conditioning and to see my 6 pack).

The number one thing I like about this book is that instead of being a 90 day quick fix it program, it's a progressive, comprehensive program for building functional strength, flexibility, bone and joint strength, and muscle density and mass. As a hard gainer, I've had trouble gaining mass in the past. My self-directed routines took longer in the gym and never really got me anywhere. And P90X, while a kickass conditioning program, isn't the best for putting on mass (even though I did gain a little bit).

The first part of the book is physiology, nutrition, and the basics of the program. The rest of the book is the workouts themselves. I find the workouts typically take about an hour, hour and fifteen to complete. The longest workout I've had so far was 2 hours, but I kept getting distracted. But the length of the workouts are, in part, dictated by the tempo of the reps themselves. For example, in the beginning stages of the programs when the workouts focus on strengthening weak points like joints and grip, there are up to 16 different exercises in a workout, not including the ab routine. But they are generally only 1 or 2 sets and the tempo is faster and the whole thing is done as a circuit. Later, especially in the Advanced Program, there might be only 2 exercises (again, not including abs), but you do 10 sets each and the tempo is really slow (like REALLY slow, I'm talking 10 seconds to lower or raise the weight slow).

The great thing about the programs is that they are progressive. The first stages are for physiological adaptation (joints, wrists, grip, etc), then hypertrophy, then strength, then maximal strength and power. Then you start it over again in the next Program. Once I wrapped my brain around the fact that I would have to work up to deadlifts, I was fine with doing single leg unweighted good mornings for a few weeks for hams. I realized that I needed to make sure my ankles, grip, knees and other areas were ready to rock before I did the heavy stuff. Having the mental attitude that this is a long, fun journey makes it a lot easier to stick with the program. By the way, even though I had always heard that big squats and deadlifts were pretty much the best exercises for the entire body, now that I've been doing them for several weeks, have figured out the right form, and have added a lot of weight to them, they leave me huffing and puffing at the end of a set! Especially the deadlifts. Man, I love those!

This is a great book and I highly recommend it for anybody who is interested in a solid, progressive, long-term resistance training program - and that includes women. The book looks very nice and there isn't a whole lot of extraneous info that the trainee doesn't need. The sole gripe I had in the beginning is that it would have been nice to have the page numbers for the exercises in the workouts section. Of course, now I have the exercises memorized and I know where to look for the new exercises that pop up.

Go get it and get started on building the physique you know you want if you are reading reviews of this book.

Ed Emberley's Drawing Book of Animals Review

My son just turned seven and really enjoys this book. He does enjoy How to Draw books in general, but he really liked this one a lot. The images are fun and Emberley breaks them down into very simple steps. This is an important concept for a child to grasp. Small doable steps can lead to something that may look impossible.

The Big Book of Boy Stuff

The Big Book of Boy Stuff Review

Wow, what a great book! It has tons of experiments, jokes and indoor and outdoor activities that are fun and sometimes educational. Now, it must be admitted that some of the entries are a little gross (see "Pooping and Peeing" on page 74), but it must be admitted that boys find such things terribly funny.

Overall, I found the book to be really funny with a lot of entertainment jam-packed into it. My fifteen-year-old son loves reading me jokes from it, laughing while he tries to get the words out. Please do not take this book too seriously - live a little! I highly recommend this book.

The Big Book of Boy Stuff Overview

There's this boy. Let's say he's somewhere between nine and thirteen years old or so. You'd like to see this kid get creative. You'd like to see him get some exercise. You'd like to see him get out from in front of the television. And you'd love for him to be motivated enough to find some stuff to do on his own. This boy NEEDS The Big Book of Boy Stuff!

The Big Book of Boy Stuff has all the important information that boys just have to know. Collected here for the first time in one place, it holds the answers to these timeless questions: What do I do if I get a bean stuck up my nose? How can I make lightning without killing myself? Where can I find new practical jokes to play on my friends and family? What is the best way to poop outside? How do I tell a girl I like her? WHY would I tell a girl I like her? How many mosquitoes does it take to suck all the blood out of a person? . . . and many, many more! This big, thick, durable book includes fascinating chapters on gross stuff, magic, emergencies, fireworks, games, experiments, jokes, activities, insults, pets, flying things, and, of course, duct tape. This is perhaps the greatest book ever published!

Midnight's Daughter (Dorina Basarab, Dhampir, Book 1)

Midnight's Daughter (Dorina Basarab, Dhampir, Book 1) Review

This book is the first in the new Dorina Basarab series, and is based in the world of Cassandra Palmer. I liked how characters I met in the other series show a very different aspect--Particularly in this case, Mercea, who is Dorina's dad. And their history is a stormy one.

The basic plot is that Dorina is a dhampir, half vamp, half human, and doesn't fit in either world. She's a vampire slayer and searching for her missing roommate and best pal. But Mercea shows up and offers to put the weight of the Vampires behind the search...if she does him a little favor and helps to lock up Uncle Dracula, who's escaped from prison.

While Dori is on the hunt for Drac and her roommate, people crawl out of the woodwork to kill her. Fay, vampires, black mages and assorted thugs keep trying to kill her AND the sexy and arrogant vampire her father has saddled her with as babysitter. There is also a war going on as the vampires, light mages, fey, and dark mages are all duking it out. (I haven't read the last two of the Cassie Palmer series, so I don't know how the war started--which I will rectify soon--and that is the only thing that really bugged me about the story, not knowing why they were fighting.)

Enjoyable, lots of action, and I have ordered the sequel. I pretty much read it in one setting.

Ramona Quimby, Age 8 (Avon Camelot Books)

Ramona Quimby, Age 8 (Avon Camelot Books) Review

The book, Ramona Quimby,Age 8, is about Ramona's third grade school life. The main character, Ramona, had a terrible first day of school. She lost her pink eraser and fought with a boy named Danny. Her teacher Mrs. Whaley thought she was a nuisance. Ramona had many problems in third grade. I had a similar experience like Ramona because I am 8 years old and she is 8 years old. We are also both in third grade. We both had our first day of third grade but mine was better! When I read this story, I felt that I needed to be polite to adults because Ramona always got in trouble and Mrs. Whaley thinks she is a nuisance. Also, my favorite part is when Ramona presents her book report to the class and when she sings "Meow, meow, meow, meow" while she does her book report. I like it when she sings because I like that song! I would recommend this book to a girl that is 8 years old and in third grade. I think they will like it because this book is perfect for them. I think a girl that is 8 years old will like it because it will be fun for her to read. SP

Ramona Quimby, Age 8 (Avon Camelot Books) Overview

Ramona feels quite grown-up taking the bus by herself, helping big sister Beezus make dinner, and trying hard to be nice to pesky Willa Jean after school. Turning eight years old and entering the first grade can do that to a girl. So how can her teacher call her a nuisance?

Ramona Quimby, Age 8 (Avon Camelot Books) Specifications

From the first day of third grade, when Ramona Quimby meets her eventual nemesis Yard Ape, life moves on at its usual wild pace--usual for the boisterous Ramona, that is. Soon she is accidentally squashing a raw egg into her hair at the school cafeteria, being forced to play Uncle Rat with her annoying young neighbor, and, worst of all, throwing up in her classroom. The responsibilities of an 8-year-old are sometimes daunting, especially in a family that is trying to squeak by while the father goes back to school. But Ramona is full of too much vim and vigor to ever be down for long.

In her second Newbery Honor Book about Ramona (the first was Ramona and Her Father), Beverly Cleary presents another slice of the Quimby family life. Author of more than two dozen children's books, Cleary has a true knack for understanding the tangle of thoughts and emotions in a child's mind and heart. Empathic, witty, and astute, she has earned many other awards, including the Newbery Medal for Dear Mr. Henshaw. Alan Tiegreen's clever line drawings have charmed countless readers of Cleary's books over the years, and his style is now inextricably tied to hers. (Ages 8 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

Harvey Penick's Little Red Book: Lessons and Teachings from a Lifetime in Golf

Harvey Penick's Little Red Book: Lessons and Teachings from a Lifetime in Golf Review

This book covers everything you need to know to improve your game. Mr. Pennick's insights are quick and concise. This is ibe of the best instructional books I have ever read. The only advice I have to give is to take one tip at a time. Pick one thing to work on, when you feel you have achieved what Mr. Pennick said, then move on to something new. The tips are also sprinkled with tales of yesteryear and legends of the game. It is difficult to read this without wanting to put the book down and try each tip as it comes along, I would say read the book once, then go back and work on the things that made hte most sense to you.

Harvey Penick's Little Red Book: Lessons and Teachings from a Lifetime in Golf Overview

THE CLASSIC BOOK OF GOLF WISDOM FROM THE GAME'S GREATEST TEACHER

The Little Red Book has become required reading for all players and fans of the game of golf, from beginners to seasoned pros. The legendary Harvey Penick, who began his golfing career as a caddie in Austria, Texas, at the age of eight, worked with an amazing array of champions over the course of nearly a century, dispensing invaluable wisdom to golfers of every level. Penick simplifies the technical jargon of other instructional books and communicates the very essence of the game, and his Little Red Book is full of inspiration and homespun wisdom that reflects at once his great love of golf as well as his great talent for teaching.

Harvey Penick's Little Red Book: Lessons and Teachings from a Lifetime in Golf Specifications

Before titanium drivers, before oversized heads and bubble shafts, before electronic systems to tell you how far you are from the pin, golf was much the same game it is today. The lessons Harvey Penick taught in the pre-gadget days still stand. The golf swing is basically the same, and Penick could teach it better than anybody. For most of his life, he never intended to publish his Little Red Book, a notebook of golf wisdom and anecdotes that he compiled with the idea that he'd pass it on to his son. But, for the sake of history, it's a good thing that he changed his mind. Contained in its 175 pages is just about all you need to know about golf from a technical standpoint, along with Penick's priceless memories of working with famous pros, teaching absolute nobodies to get the ball in the air, and finding a horde of bat guano and hauling it across town in a pickup truck to fertilize his golf course. This book makes you feel good about playing golf, that you're part of something steeped in ritual and mystery and tradition, and that the game was played perfectly well before perimeter-weighted, graphite-shafted irons came along.

Death's Mistress (Dorina Basarab, Book 2)

Death's Mistress (Dorina Basarab, Book 2) Review

I won't go into detail about the story b/c plenty of other reviewers have. This is a great second book. Dory, Louis-Cesare, Mircea, all the characters, even secondary ones (Ray is hilarious), are developed well and you really care about them. Like the first book, there's also humor that's actually funny (not the fake humor that's only amusing to the characters in the book). Mircea & Dory's relationship is explored in more detail & is fascinating, and the romance element still lingers, with a twist.

There were a few things that bothered me, hence the 4 stars. I did find there was too much detail at times (like background info about the Fae) that stalled the action, and some of the action scenes I had trouble following. Also, I did figure out pretty early on who the killer was, and that's not something I'm usually good at, which makes think it might have been obvious & I don't think it was supposed to be. But figuring it out didn't take anything away from the story.

No story spoilers, but stop reading this review if you don't want any info about the ending. My biggest complaint is the ending. Not that it wasn't good & it did pull everything together nicely, but I'm not a fan of the way the author did it. She spent the last few chapters masterfully creating a suspense-filled climax, then did a fast-forward, and essentially had a narrator fill us in on what happened. It almost felt like the author got sick of writing the book & just gave up. I've only read this series, but based on the high quality of what I've read, I was disappointed.

Overall, I loved the book and can't wait for the next one.

First Lord's Fury (Codex Alera, Book 6)

First Lord's Fury (Codex Alera, Book 6) Review

This has been such a great read for me. I've enjoyed this series from book one, and now Butcher is bringing Tavi's story to a close. I read a complaint or two about how this book has too many battle scenes, but (and I have never favored them in the past) I don't mind Butcher's description of the battles. I find he does it in such a concise and clear manner that I find it more thrilling to read than boring. What I most enjoyed about his writing is the character development. Tavi has grown to much from book to book...from a shepard boy to the First Lord. Of course this was not just handed over to him. Tavi has proven his devotion to his people, his tenacity, his intelligence, his friendship, and loyalty to those he loves in each story. Adversity was dumped on him, and he rose above.

In this final book Tavi is coming home from Canem only to find his country taken over by the cronch (sp?) and it's queen. Basically, his people is looking extinction in the face. Tavi, through ingenuity and determination plans a way to get across a land that would normally take weeks in a matter of days to help the last of his people as they make their final stand against the queen.

I would highly recommend this book to any fantasy/science fiction/adventure reader. Butcher does a fine job of creating well-rounded and interesting people, as well as creating different and unique races.

Make Your Own Butterfly Sticker Activity Book (Dover Little Activity Books)

Make Your Own Butterfly Sticker Activity Book (Dover Little Activity Books) Review

I just received this and a few other "Dover Little Activity Books," and can't wait to give them to my niece for Christmas. These are completely worth the .50 I paid--I'd have to pay more than that to buy plain old stickers from a craft store (plus CA's hurtful tax), but this book allows you to use it too. It also looks like the stickers are durable and reusable, so the butterfly can have "makeovers." Note that not all of the "Dover Little Activity Books" are "activity" books. Some are just books of stickers so read the description/editor's notes to confirm.

The Extraordinary Adventures of Ordinary Boy, Book 1: The Hero Revealed

The Extraordinary Adventures of Ordinary Boy, Book 1: The Hero Revealed Review

If you like Captain Underpants, then you'll love Ordinary Boy -the Hero Revealed by William Boniface. This book takes place in Superopolis. In this graphic novel the main character is Ordinary Boy. Soon he and his friends start collecting trading cards and before long one is missing........

My favorite character is Ordinary Boy because in some ways we're alike. OB reminded me of me because we're both smart. One connection I have is text-to-text because I have read a book similar to this called Captain Underpants.

I liked the book because it "cliff-hanged" you. My favorite part was when Amazing Indestructo turns out to be a baby. If I could change something I would let OB have boring powers but in the end prove him good. This is a book for ages 8-12.

Child's Book of Character Building: Growing Up in God's World - At Home, at School, at Play, Book 1

Child's Book of Character Building: Growing Up in God's World - At Home, at School, at Play, Book 1 Review

I have enjoyed having this book and found it to be a great way to teach my child Christlike behavior. The book is simple to read and understand with large type for little eyes that might want to look on as you read (or some children may want to read it on their own). The concepts are easy to explain and are valuable for teaching Godly living.

The book has twelve sections with each section focusing on a particular character trait. Each trait is featured in four different stories showing the trait in the Bible, at Home, at School, and at Play. For instance, "Attentive" is one of the traits. The sections are as follows: Attentive in the Bible, which discusses how Jesus was attentive; Attentive at Home which highlights how a little girl should have paid attention to her Mother; Attentive at School shows how a child should have paid attention to his teacher; and Attentive at Play teaches how a child should have been attentive in an outdoor family activity.

At the beginning of each section there is a Bible verse to use alongside the stories, and each section concludes with Character Development Challenges which reinforce the lesson. There are full page black and white photos at the beginning of each story which depict children and could be colored if desired.

Scripture used is King James, which might need explanation for children who are not accustomed to this translation. Also, as a homeschool Mom I had to tweak the school stories a little bit, usually opting to show how this trait could be used in Sunday School or in group settings where other parents might be teaching or directing my child.

Child's Book of Character Building: Growing Up in God's World - At Home, at School, at Play, Book 1 Overview

Can a child understand what it means to forgive, to be wise, to be tenderhearted, or to be orderly? A Child's Book of Character Building uses an imaginative blend of simple explanation and interesting storytelling to teach Christian behavior to children ages 3-7.

Drowning Ruth: A Novel (Oprah's Book Club)

Drowning Ruth: A Novel (Oprah's Book Club) Review

This is a wonderful engrossing book; it is divided between Amanda telling her story and her niece,Ruth, telling how she fits into the book.

The book contains much. There is the mystery of Mathilda's death, how did she drown? Was Amanda responsible for her sisters' death? If she did kill Mathilda why? Question is how did all this really happen? Noone knows but those involved and one of them would never tell.

Next is these characters living in the world of nature. There is the sharp cool colors of winter, snow everywhere and closing in everything in its orbit, a beautiful season, cold and harsh. Next comes spring with renewal of life. Tiny pale green leaves appear on trees and spring flowers carpet and beautify the ground. After comes the hot, lush sleepy days of summer. Then there is the dying back of the land in autumn with its beautiful colors which light up the world around them. This is the most beautiful season of all. Plus there is the lake which is beautiful, but deadly. It has taken lives, especially the life of a loved one, Mathilda, Ruths' mother, Amandas' sister, Carls' wife.
But these characters loved tne land, loved the bounties they grew and loved it even when it took from them.

Amanda is a woman of her time, close mouthed and secretive; so much different from this day and age when people parade their wrong doings proudly on televison for all to see. The characters in this novel kept their sins inside, refusing to confide in those close to them or even to those who should be told and had every right to know the truth.

This is also a story of children being raised by parents who were mentally and emotionally ill. Amanda's mother was warm, loving, full of fun, the kind of mother any kid would love to have. The next day she would chase her daughter away calling her a noisy, pesty brat who gave her a headache. The father was cold and unemotional. When Mathilda was born eight years after her sister, Amanda had to spend too much time raising and parenting the younger girl. This is too much responsibility for a little girl. Ruths' mother drowned when she was four; her father had spent much of her babyhood in Europe fighting in World War I. These two clung together feeling that each other was all each other had.

When Amanda had another mental breakdown she was sent to a sanitarium to recuperate. Carls' cousin came to keep house for father and daughter. Ruth behaved as an obnoxius brat and drove the poor woman away all so that Amanda could come back. When it was time for Ruth to go to school Amanda told Ruth to pretend she was too sick and couldn't attend. But both were found out.

When at school Ruth met her best and only friend, Imogene. Imogene was the opposite of Ruth; she was fun loving, outgoing, extroverted and had a great personality. Imogene had come from a normal family background and had loving parents who would let her be all that she could be. Ruth was quiet, introverted, distrustful of people and did not like to made friends. Amanda disapproved of this friendship just as she disapproved of Carl coming back from the service and moving in with Ruth and Amanda. Amanda was instrumental in driving him away..

So i suggest reading this book to find out how all ended. Great read.

Drowning Ruth: A Novel (Oprah's Book Club) Specifications

Oprah Book Club® Selection, September 2000: For 19th-century novelists--from Jane Austen to George Eliot, Flaubert to Henry James--social constraint gave a delicious tension to their plots. Yet now our relaxed morals and social mobility have rendered many of the classics untenable. Why shouldn't Maisie know what she knows? It will all come out in family therapy anyway. The vogue for historical novels depends in part on our pleasure in reentering a world of subtle cues and repressed emotion, a time in which a young woman could destroy her life by saying yes to the wrong man. After all, there was no reliable birth control, no divorce, no chance of an independent life or a scandal-free separation.

Christina Schwarz's suspenseful debut pivots on two of the lost "virtues" of the past: silence and stoicism. Drowning Ruth opens in 1919, on the heels of the influenza epidemic that followed the First World War. Although there were telephones and motor cars and dance halls in the small towns of Wisconsin in those years, the townspeople remained rigid and forbidding. As a young woman, Amanda Starkey, a Lutheran farmer's daughter, had been firmly discouraged from an inappropriate marriage with a neighboring Catholic boy. A few years later, as a nurse in Milwaukee, she is seduced by a dishonorable man. Her shame sends her into a nervous breakdown, and she returns to the family farm. Within a year, though, her beloved sister Mathilde drowns under mysterious circumstances. And when Mathilde's husband, Carl, returns from the war, he finds his small daughter, Ruth, in Amanda's tenacious grip, and she will tell him nothing about the night his wife drowned. Amanda's parents, too, are long gone. "I killed my parents. Had I mentioned that?" muses Amanda.

I killed them because I felt a little fatigued and suffered from a slight, persistent cough. Thinking I was overworked and hadn't been getting enough sleep, I went home for a short visit, just a few days to relax in the country while the sweet corn and the raspberries were ripe. From the city I brought fancy ribbon, two boxes of Ambrosia chocolate, and a deadly gift... I gave the influenza to my mother, who gave it to my father, or maybe it was the other way around.
Schwarz is a skillful writer, weaving her grim tale across several decades, always returning to the fateful night of Mathilde's death. Drowning Ruth displays her gift for pacing and her harsh insistence on the right ending, rather than the cheery one. --Regina Marler

Books Children Love: A Guide to the Best Children's Literature

Books Children Love: A Guide to the Best Children's Literature Review

Every parent should BEGIN their children's library experience with this book! There are hundreds of thousands of titles for children's books, and our children will only be able to read a limited number of these throughout their childhood years. So, don't waste time on the losers in the bunch!

It is BEST to start with a PLAN for raising children, and add a tool, such as this book, which can assist us in guiding our children's book choices!

Every home library should have this book from which to START the process of enriching children through literature. There is certainly plenty of twaddle to read out there which is of little or no value to our children... so why waste their time allowing them to wade through this twaddle and read it? This is often what kills a child's desire to read.

Many books today are poorly written with confusing characters and lacking a protagonist. Many times there are no character building moral values imparted!

This little handbook is great for helping us (parents and teachers) ensure that the best of children's literature is not left behind when our children are beginning their reading experiences.

This book will inform you about children's books which you never knew existed. Most books assigned for our children to read are actually chosen by people who know next to nothing about the options in children's literature.

I am reminded of the little book store owner in "You've Got Mail." Kathleen "Shopgirl" Kelly (played by Meg Ryan) knows all of the wonderful, imaginative, classic children's books for children to read; while Joe "NY152" Fox (played by Tom Hanks just wants to build a conglomerate book store down the street and sell whatever his buyers stock in it. His staff knows no more about the books on the shelves than the shoppers!

Shopgirl knew all the best children's literature and was able to guide her customers through the process of choosing rich reading... those titles that every child should read at least once (because of the quality of writing and storytelling), but will usually read another twenty times because of the richness of the story and the overall experience with which the child is left!

Choose books which have characters to aspire to, stories to imitate, life lessons to be learned, all while fertilizing the seeds of each child's natural imagination!

The Book of God: The Bible as a Novel

The Book of God: The Bible as a Novel Review

I love how this is written. The beginning is so real. The story just opened my eyes to Saul then Paul, and told of his devotion and love for God. What a great book, as with all of Wagerin's books. What a gift to readers. I just finished the Book of God, and now I'm about to get "Reliving the Passion" and "Preparing for Jesus". I have read "Jesus", I did back in 2007 when I was on my way to Kuwait, and I loved it. The "Book of God" brought me to tears many times. I truly love how he told the story of Jesus' crucifiction. Wow, is all I can say. One of my favorite parts is where he told of the gratitude Jesus showed to Longinus, and how it changed his live to care for Barrabus' neice. My other favorite part, no matter how many times I read it, is the story of the other two who were crucified with Christ. Marvelous reading! I look forward to reading more. I have added Wagerin to my favorite authors like Orson Scott Card and Marek Halter. If you are like me and you love to read biblical fiction, but you want it true to the bible, read these authors. I want to add that the end of "The Book of God" has a great reference and study guide. I will use it after I also get it in Hard Back. My paper back has been just tortured because I travel so much. Thank you Mr. Wagerin.
