The Discipline Book: How to Have a Better-Behaved Child From Birth to Age Ten Review
This is not an easy way to parent a child even though most of the stuff in here is common sense stuff like, "Hey, you shouldn't let your baby cry." and, "Babies like to be held." and, "You shouldn't let your child disrespect you or others."
There are a lot of people who have a problem with things that the Sears say in this book like that mothers should stay at home with their babies if possible. Maybe that's true, maybe that's not, but because I may not agree with that for our family, doesn't make me discount this essential (yes, I said it) book. This book will help you turn out a compassionate, thinking child. And Dads? Well, if one can merely substitute "father" when the book says, "mother" or "parent", then YOU CAN USE THIS BOOK TOO.
There are also a lot of people who think that the Sears' appear "holier-than-thou" in this book. I think that they are merely giving personal experiences of their techniques in action and I mean, I'm the one who bought the book, so am I not paying for this author's expertise? It makes no sense for me to resent the author of a parenting book for appearing to be a more diligent practitioner of his and her own parenting technique.
Here's the thing. This book helped me to understand my children and to know them. That's really the key. I didn't stay at home with our children (back to school at 5 months with our first, back to work at 4 weeks with our second, and back to work at 10 weeks with our third), we don't like a family bed (we like to have sex, I'm not going to lie), but we go back to this book at least once a month to help us with discipline situations.
This book did not make me a perfect parent, but it gave me the confidence to be the perfect parent for our family.

The Discipline Book: How to Have a Better-Behaved Child From Birth to Age Ten Overview
From the bestselling authors of The Baby Book and The Birth Book comes The Discipline Book, the definitive guide to raising happy, well-adjusted, well-behaved children. Seasoned parents of eight, Bill and Martha Sears draw on personal experience and their professional knowledge as childcare experts to provide an authoritative approach to a broad range of disciplinary issues and practices.
With focus on preventing behavior problems as well as managing them when they arise, the Searses offer clear, practical advice on everything parents need to know about disciplining young children. Believing that discipline starts at birth, the Searses discuss baby discipline, disciplining the toddler, mother-father roles in modern parenting, saying no, self-esteem as the foundation of good behavior, helping a child to express feelings, the constructive use of anger, good nutrition for good behavior, and sleep discipline.
On handling problem behavior, the Searses cover sibling rivalry, spanking and alternatives to spanking, breaking annoying habits, and eliminating bothersome behaviors like whining and talking back. The Searses strongly advocate teaching children values like apologizing and sharing, and explain how to deal with such issues as lying, stealing, and cheating. In addition, the Searses address building healthy sexuality and discipline in special situations such as after divorce and in the single-parent household.
