The Alchemyst: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel Review
Ooh, ever since I read Harry Potter I've been intrigued by this whole Nicholas Flamel legend. So much so that I even wrote a paper about it. Now that there's a book series about it, I had to get my hands on it.
For the most part it was pretty interesting seeing how the author weaved history into his books. I liked his magic system and how each individual has their own unique smell and their own colored aura. It was also pretty fast paced so you probably won't get bored. Right from the first chapter it starts off with explosions and high speed chases, so it's got what you need right there.
But the biggest fault of this book is that it's very cliché. The whole twins becoming the special ones mentioned in the prophecy, the only ones who can save the world, and having special powers that are very strong sort of turned me off. Also, the brother, Josh, annoyed the heck out of me.
Near the end he did/thought the most dumbest things. I mean, I get questioning the true motives of your would be savior/person that you're following but then your sister?! Right after she does something big in the exact opposite of what you were thinking? WHAT?
The writing is decent. It started off with a bang and then sort of tapered off by the first battle and became a lot more simplistic. It was more of a listing of events than an engrossing scene. Everything throughout this whole book takes place in just two days which is really unrealistic to me. I doubt people would be even standing if they were constantly attacked non-stop.
Not bad.
